Junior Sailing on August 30, 2005

Note: This was the final race day of the August Junior Series. Click Here for details on the rating system, starting group method and race results.

It was the last day of Junior Program racing. With weather being affected by the remains of hurricane Katrina passing to the east, the sky was overcast - but there was plenty of wind.

In the first of four races, the sailors starting in the Green group are working to catch those that started ahead of them.

Coaches Moody and Messerschmidt were in the safety boat today, ready to assist with any problems - but mostly giving encouragement and advice.

In the first race, Greg Scovill took full advantage of his Red Group start and had one of the fastest sails of the evening - ending with a win. Even the power boat leaving a wake to slow his boat couldn't stop Greg.

Chris Miller had a breakthrough evening. She has been sailing well over the past weeks - but this day she put it all together, posting two second place finishes and two first place finishes. Her success today was due to her ability to keep the boat going all the time by keeping her sail full.

Cody Eggenberger heads to the windward mark. Cody has sailed well all season - improving each time. He ends the season with the highest handicap rating in the group (9).

Grant Messerschmidt did some very solid racing this year. His five second place finishes over the course of the fall series were more than any other sailor.

Faith Krogulecki may have been the smallest and lightest and youngest sailor in the group - but that didn't stop her from garnering more first place finishes (5) than any other sailor over the course of the series. Here she is, polishing off the season with a bullet in the last race.

On the downwind legs there were some crowded mark roundings all year. There were a couple tonight as well.

Doug Crawford sailed the LSC Yellow boat tonight - and a second place finish pushed his handicap rating to the highest possible and putting him in the "Go" group. This gave some of the sailors a three minute head start on him. The other sailors took advantage of that and pushed Doug back to the bottom spot in the next race. At least he didn't have to give everyone that big a head start again.

Faith gets ready to tack for the finish line. As the night went on, she got better and better at keeping her boat moving and finished with a second a a first in the final two races.

On the way in after racing. After putting their boats away, sailors and coaches were the guests of Eggenbergers for a Marshmallow Roast and presentation of certificates.
