Deck Duties 2008

An effort is made to accommodate member interests. If members have a preference as to their deck duty, please contact the Commodore by email at commodore@lansingsailing.org. Since there are more duties than there are Club members, to continue making our Club the success it is we ask members to sign up for multiple duties where possible.

Memorial Day Picnic

Inventory items already on hand and purchase paper and plastic supplies, franks and brats, soft drinks and other items needed for the picnic need to be purchased. A plan for a activities, including on-water activities, needs to be developed and implemented. The picnic tables need to be covered, grills started and food cooked. Need two or three members.

Independance Day Picnic

Since the Lake Lansing Property Owners Association usually has July 4th activities, try to coordinate our activities with theirs. Need two or three members.  

Labor Day Picnic

Annual Awards Banquet

Plans and carry out the Annual Awards Banquet. Need three or four members.

Coordinate Junior Sailing

Organize a series of Tuesday evening learn to sail and advanced sailing activities from mid-June to mid-July followed by a Tuesday evening junior racing program from mid-July to mid-August. At the end of the program, certificates and awards are handed out. Need one member.

Coach Junior Sailing

Coach in the Junior Sailing program from mid-June to mid-August. Need four to five members.

 

Crew Coordination

Serve as a clearing house to identify and connect crew with skippers. Also, to arrange for those interested in crewing but without experience to receive an orientation from an experienced skipper. Update a Crew Directory as necessary and work with the webmaster to make this directory available in the Members Only area. Need one member (preferably a Lightning skipper or crew). -

Coordinate Adult Learn to Sail

Organize the adult "Learn to Sail" and "Mentoring" programs so that individuals who become Associate Members for the purpose of learning to sail receive proper instruction and become certified to use a Club owned sailboat. Need one member.  

Teach/Mentor Adult Learn to Sail

Teach in the adult "Learn to Sail" program or take on a "Mentoring" mentoring role. Need four or five members.  

Racing - Gil Chesbro

Race Committee for Lightning Regatta

Provide race management services. This includes running the races from the Committee Boat, recording results and providing Safety Boat support. Need three members.

 

Race Committee for Sunfish Regatta

Provide race management services. This includes running the races from the Committee Boat, recording results and providing Safety Boat support. Need three members.

 

Race Committee for Laser Regatta

Provide race management services. This includes running the races from the Committee Boat, recording results and providing Safety Boat support. Need three members.

Race Committee Coordination

Coordinate the fulfillment of each member's obligation to serve on a Sunday race committee. Where possible, this is done through voluntary sign-up. In addition, it is often necessary to ask members who haven't signed up to serve on dates where committee is needed. Also, employ and supervise two persons to head up Wednesday evening and Sunday Race Committees. Make sure the Race Committees send results to the "Scoring Guy". Need one member. - Gil Chesbro

Race Committee Equpment

Maintain all Race Committee equipment, making sure replacement parts are ordered as needed and that all equipment is operating properly. Need one member. - Gil Chesbro

Prepare Membership Promotion Material

Prepare handouts, website material and other membership promotion items. Include prepartion of materials for use at Quiet Waters Symposium, Be a Tourist and other events. Include Junior Sailing Program and Adult Learn to Sail promotional items. - Susanna Wagner

Media Relations

At the end of each race day, obtain results and send them to local media. Work with local media to obtain additional coverage for sailing events and LSC member sailing accomplishments. Need several members. - Julie Pierce

Quiet Waters Symposium

Organize and implement a booth at the Quiet Waters Symposium, including display of one or more sailboats. Use as an opportunity to promote memberships in the Club - particularly Associate Memberships that include a "learn to sail" class. Need a coordinator, a member to supply a boat, several members to prepare handouts, a video presentation as well as other aspects of an attractive booth, and members to be at the booth. - Jonathan Ahlbrand, Coordinator

Be a Tourist in Your Own Town

Organize and implement sailboat rides on Lake Lansing as part of the Lansing Area "Be a Tourist in Your Own Town" project. Use this as an opportunity to promote memberships in the Club - particularly Associate Memberships that include a "learn to sail" class. Liaison to Lake Lansing Property Owners Association

Serve in a liaison capacity to the Lake Lansing Property Owner's Association so that we can be a full partner with other property owners for good stewardship of the lake. - Pat Dolan

Monitor the Club’s telephone answering system

Check the Club's telephone answering system regularly and pass messages on to the appropriate person. This activity can be done from work or home and messages can be passed on using email. Need one member. - Jonathan Ahlbrand

Docks and Grounds - Jim Fletcher

Docks

Monitor the docks and approaches to assure they are kept in good repair. Assure the seagull preventers are continuously in place. Several times during the year as the lake level goes down, adjust the length of the anchor chains on the Schneider Dock. Need one member.  

Mowing, Triming and Round-Up Application

Oversee the employment and supervision of one or more persons to weekly mow the gounds, use a weed-whacker to trim throughout the property and to apply Round-Up as necessary to prevent grass and weeds from growing in the driveway, in areas where there are wood chips such as under the boat racks and in other areas designated by landscapers. Need one member.  

Drives and Beach Area

Monitor the driveway and beach areas, and arranging additional gravel or sand as necessary to properly maintain those areas.  

Landscape Front Gate

Develop and maintain a landscape plan for the front gate area, including the area immediately inside the gate and the area on the street side of the gate. Our goal is to have a low maintenance but highly attractive entrance to the Club that masks parts of the Club that are most unsightly. Include a sign on one side of the front gate noting the club name, street address, website UR and the message "Membership Inquiries Welcome". Remove the existing sign. Need one or two members.  

Landscape North Side of Clubhouse

Develop and maintain a landscape plan for the flower bed on the north side of the Clubhouse. Our goal is to have a low maintenance but highly attractive flower bed that masks the area underneath the Clubhouse and enhances the attractiveness of the Clubhouse area. Landscape Launch Ramp Area

Develop and maintain a landscape plan for either side of the launch ramp. Our goal is to have a low maintenance but highly attractive area that discourages members from shovelling sand and seaweed that accumulates on the ramp to either side of the ramp. This sand and seaweed should be put in a wheelbarrow and moved to an area on the property designated for that purpose. Need one or two members.  

Landscape South Berm

Develop and maintain a landscape plan for the berm on the South side of our property. Our goal is to have a low maintenance but highly attractive landscape that prevents neighbors from seeing activity on our property and prevents our members from seeing activity on neighboring property. Need one or two members.  

Landscape North Property Line

Develop and maintain a landscape plan for the area between the lake and sail shed on the north property line. Our goal is to have a low maintenance but highly attractive landscape that prevents neighbors from seeing activity on our property without blocking their view of the lake and prevents our members from seeing activity on neighboring property. Need one or two members.  

Landscape and waterfront

A group of members needs to develop and implement plans to improve the landscape in small increments. Attention in 2007 needs to be given to the berm on the south side of the property, improving the gate entry area and improving the waterfront - particularly the beach launch area.  

Facilities - Wayne Loescher

Building maintenance and Improvement

As problems develop (with plumbing for example), the group of members working in this area is called upon. This group also does a survey of needed improvements or repairs, develops and implements a plan to make those improvements or repairs. Need two or three members.  

Supplies and Services

Make sure the Club has kitchen and changing room supplies such as toilet paper, paper towel, liquid soap, surface cleaner, toilet cleaner, paper plates, plastic spoons-forks-knives, plastic cups and styrofoam cups. Arrange for bottled water thru Culligan as well as other necessary service. Need one member.  

First Aid

Make sure the Club's first aid kits and other first aid needs located in the Clubhouse and on the Committee Boat are up-to-date, replenishing supplies as needed during the year. Need one member. - Dave and Sandy Vietti

Audit Committee

Do an annual review of the Club's financial records to assure they are being kept properly. Need two members.  

Club Boats - Doug Carlson

Power Boat Certification

Educate and certify members in the use of Club Power Boats and safety procedures as needed. Maintain a list of members fully certified. Our goal is to have each member able to utilize the Committee Boat or Safety Boat if necessary in an emergency. Need one member.  

Committee Boat and Safety Boat

Periodically check to see that these Boats and their lifts are in proper condition. Call any repair work necessary to the attention of the Club Boat Director. Arrange for the Boat to be periodically cleaned. Need one member.  

Club Lightning "Oh m" (Marshall Donation)

Periodically check to see that this Club owned boat (including sails, trailer and lift) is in proper condition. Call any repair work necessary to the attention of the Club Boat Director. Need one member. - Susanna Wagner

Club Sunfish 1 (Kleiman Donation) and Club Sunfish 2 (Coxon Donation)

Maintain the Club website. A project for 2008 is to move the website to a new hosting service that will be less expensive and offer more capabilities. Also for 2008, develop a method of permitting members the ability to create e-Sheet on-line and cause it to be emailed to members and other subscribers. Need two members. - Susanna Wagner
