Sailing and Informal Racing Nights
Tuesday evenings beginning July 15th and continuing through August are devoted to Junior Sailing. Any Junior Sailor that has a Sailing I Certificate is welcome to come to the club and sail. It's a great way to have fun with friends. One or more coaches from the Lansing Sailing Club is available in a Safety Boat to answer questions, provide coaching for those that have something they want to work on, and to watch over the sailors. For those that want to do some racing, the coaches will run some short course races and offer tips to the sailors. A Regular or Associate Membership in the Lansing Sailing Club is required to participate (Note: Camp participants have at least an Associate membership as part of their Camp Fee). |
Advanced Racing
Junior Sailors who are ready to participate in Lansing Sailing Club racing activities on Wednesday Evenings (Sunfish and Lasers) or on Sunday Afternoons (Lightnings) will be assigned coaches to help them quickly learn the skills necessary to be competitive. A Regular or Associate membership in the Lansing Sailing Club is required to participate (Note: Camp participants have at least an Associate membership as part of their Camp Fee).
For Junior Sailors that want to become involved in competitive Junior Regatta Sailing, there are many opportunities within a short drive. |
How to Register and Additional Information
Who can participate?
Open to boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 18.
What is the Junior Sailing Program?
We teach boys and girls how to sail in our Learn to Sail I course. Junior sailors will learn how to sail a small boat by themselves. For those who already know how to sail, the Learn to Sail II course adds to their skills and builds their sailing confidence. Those Junior Sailors who are ready for a more challenging boat are eligible to participate in our Laser Sailing program.
We emphasize safe sailing and having fun as well as developing good sailing skills. Beginning in mid-July, the program shifts to an informal sailing and racing format. This is a great opportunity to sail with friends and enjoy being on the water where it is always just a little cooler on a hot summer day. The coaches will also run some informal races for those who want to particiapte.
Where is the Program run?
The program is held at the Lansing Sailing Club and on the waters of Lake
Lansing. The Lansing Sailing Club is at 6039 E. Lake Drive, Haslett, MI,
on the east side of Lake Lansing.
Instructors and Coaches
Iinstruction is provided by University Sailors and by members of the Lansing Sailing Club. The instructors and coaches enjoy working with junior sailors, love to sail and have
years of experience sailing a wide range of sailing craft including extensive
sailboat racing experience.
Boats
Sunfish and Optimist sailboats are used for the Learn to Sail I and Learn to Sail II courses. We prefer that Junior Sailors sail a boat owned by their family. However, we recognize that many families don't know if they want to have a boat until they have some experience with sailing. In these situations, the Lansing Sailing Club provides a boat for the sailor to use. There is a modest fee for using a Lansing Sailing Club Boat to help defray the costs of equipment repair and replacement.
As Junior Sailors graduate from the Optimist or Sunfish to a Laser, the Lansing Sailing Club can usually provide a Laser for the sailor to use initially for a modest fee. However, families of Junior Laser Sailors are encouraged to obtain their own Laser as soon as possible.
What to Bring
Here is a checklist of what to wear and bring:
- Junior sailors should wear their
swimming suits and expect to get wet. Among other things, we teach juniors
how to recover from a capsize.
- Wear non-slip boat or tennis shoes with
white soles (dark soles leave marks on the boats).
- No flip-flops
- secure footing on the boats is important.
- A life jacket (the Lansing Sailing Club has life jackets available for those who do not have their own).
- A change of clothing so you can go home in dry clothes.
- Remember
to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and note that it is always cooler on the water. We sail in rain and cool weather, but not during thunderstorms - so bring the appropriate rain gear.
- Sailing gloves are strongly recommended.
