Tuesday Evenings, June 7th through
July 12th
from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the Lansing Sailing Club
and
Saturday, July 16 at Orchard Lake Country Club
then
Who can participate?
Open to boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 18. Membership in the Lansing Sailing Club is a requirement. Associate Memberships for $135 are available and entitle the entire family to participate in activities at the Lansing Sailing Club during 2005, including the use of Club sailboats.
What is the Junior Sailing Program?
We teach boys and girls how to sail, including the basics of sailboat racing. For those who already know how to sail, a personal plan for adding new sailing skills will be created and coaching provided. Junior sailors will learn how to sail a small boat by themselves - and will learn how to sail a larger boat as a crew of three. On Saturday, July 16th, six Junior Sailors will be selected by the coaches to participate in a special all day sailing event at the Orchard Lake Country Club. We emphasize safe sailing and having fun as well as developing good sailing skills.
Where is the Program run?
The program is held at the Lansing Sailing Club and on the waters of Lake
Lansing. The Lansing Sailing Club is at 6039 E. Lake Drive, Haslett, MI,
on the east side of Lake Lansing.
Coaches and Boats
Members of the Lansing Sailing Club make their sailboats available and
serve as coaches for this program. We also use Club owned sailboats. This year, we plan to have junior sailors sail in several different types of sailboats. Sunfish, Lasers, Optimists and Lightnings will be used for the program.. The coaches enjoy working with junior sailors, love to sail and have
years of experience sailing a wide range of sailing craft including extensive
sailboat racing experience.
What to Bring
Here is a checklist of what to wear and bring:
- Junior sailors should wear their
swimming suits and expect to get wet. Among other things, we teach juniors
how to recover from a capsize.
- Wear non-slip boat or tennis shoes with
white soles to wear (dark soles leave marks on the boats).
- No flip-flops
- secure footing on the boats is important.
- A life jacket.
- A change of clothing so you can go home in dry clothes.
- Remember
to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and note that it is always cooler on the water. We sail in rain and cool weather, but not during thunderstorms - so bring the appropriate rain gear.
- Sailing gloves are strongly recommended.
