LSC Sailors Doug Carlson and Mike Moody

Laser Regatta - "Best Ever"

Mike Moody added his kudos to those of others about Saturday's Laser Regatta: "This was the best Laser Regatta we have every had." From the sailing to the Race Committee work, from the door prizes to the trophies, from the look of the Club to the great BBQ - everything was first class.

Doug Carlson, Laser Fleet Captain, was quick to complement the many members who gave their time to the cause. "Our members just can't be beat. So many people volunteered and responded to the jobs that needed to be done. They are terrific.

Of course, there was the regatta itself. Won by Sean Fidler by one point over Tom LaBelle with Doug Carlson third. Local sailors Mike Moody and Olav Messerschmidt tied for sixth place. There were a total of 23 boats participating.

Hutton Win Highlights Sunday Racing

Tom Hutton, teaming with Nikiforos Delatolas and Jonathan DeLauter, went right on the second upwind of Race 2 Sunday while everyone else went left. The move paid a huge dividend as they came to the windward mark well in front of the fleet and easily led from there to the finish.

In the first race, Mike Moody trailed the leading boat at the final leeward mark, but made only one tack while the leader made three - and timed a right shift exactly to get lifted to the pin end of the finish line. The result was a win. Ron Marshall and Damien Sheppard sailed with Moody. The threesome also posted a third and a second in the other two races.

John LeFevre, Christa Betts and Brad Kleihege were aboard "Sail Fevre" and pushed the leaders all day. After putting a third and a fourth in the record book, they turned their attention to the final race of the day. Although they were second at the final windward mark, good spinnaker work put them in the lead coming to the last leeward mark. However, problems with the spinnaker and getting the centerboard down lost one place and another place was lost while attacking the leader. Still, the crew sailed very well and had impressive speed.

"Wind Dancer", with Pat Dolan driving, Bob Miller in the front and Gil Chesbro in the middle, sailed solidly all day and ended the day with a win after getting second place finishes in the earlier races.

Dolan Leads Lightning Fleet Standings

At this point in the season, six Lightning skippers are qualifying for awards. They are led by Pat Dolan's 2305 Points, followed closely by Mike Moody with 2174.

A battle for third is very tight with Fleet Captain Blaine Severin leading Vice Commodore Jonathan Ahlbrand 1680 to 1603.

Merrick Hurlbutt and Larry Koster are also in a close contest while Jim Fletcher needs only a couple more races to become the seventh qualifier. John LeFevre could also qualify by sailing all remaining races.

There are six more Sunday race days remaining in the season which ends with the races on October 4 .

Lasers and Sunfish Sailors Head Into Final Three Weeks

Last Wednesday was another great night of Laser and Sunfish Racing. Mike Moody and Olav Messerschmidt shared all the first place finishes with two each. Olav added a couple of thirds his other two races. Tom Hutton continues to sail impressively, posting a second in Race 2 for an 8-2-5-6 evening of sailing.

Doug Carlson picked up the other second places on a 2-4-2-2 night. Pat Dolan had his best evening for the year with a 4-6-3-4.

Another personal best was put in by Aaron Picot, who notched a third place finish. In the previous week he posted a personal best fourth place finish.

For the Sunfish Fleet, Neil Harrison's pair of first place finishes in races 2 and 3 were bracketed by John Fishbeck's firsts in races 1 and 4. Neil added second place finishes in his other two races while John's other races were a three and atwo.

Dave Vietti got thirds in his first and final races while Dennis Dudley claimed the final third spot of the night. Maribeth Fletcher's second in race 2 brought her a mention in the Lansing State Journal.

Standings and race results are posted on the website by our infamous "Scoring Guy". From the home page at www.lansingsailing.org, click on "Racing" - then click on the fleet Icon.

Pick a Job to Do

As all Lansing Sailing Club members know, the Club thrives because of the willingness of our members to take on jobs that need to be done. Here is a list of some tasks that need attention right now. To volunteer contact Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher (email: janef@tir.com, phone: 517-655-2174) or Commodore Pat Dolan (email: commodore@lansingsailing.org, phone: 517-214-6568). They will arrange for you to get complete details on what needs to be done.

Club Boat Organization - With the new racks in place, Club Boats need to be reorganized, including putting clear markings on the boats and rack location.

Jobs Underway

Cement Work Estimate - estimates are needed for launch ramp repair, seawall reconstruction and construction of a pad for the Racing Equipment Shed. - Bob Miller

Jobs Done Recently - Thank You

Life Preserver Storage - build storage bars and obtain hangers to store Lansing Sailing Club pfds in the keys/gas shed. See Commodore for details.

Repair Lift - the cable on our lift for "Oh m" needs to be replaced with a longer cable and restrung on the drum.

Install Lift - once the cable on our lift for "Oh m" is replaced, the lift needs to be put in place in the well of the North Dock.

Picnic Tables Painted - Put a coat of paint on the six picnic tables at the Club. - Thanks Larry Koster

Oversee Electical Box Overhaul - Breakers were tripping and we needed to determine what needs to be done to resolve this, obtain cost estimates and oversee getting the work done once Board of Directors approval is obtained for expenditures. - Thanks Chuck Amboy

Sunfish Racks Built - Storage for twelve Sunfish has been created in new racks. In the lower portion, dollys can easily be used to get the boats to and from the launch area. Boats stored on the upper part of the rack must be lifted, and requires two people to get the boat on and off the rack. - Thanks Jim Fletcher and Pat Dolan

Club Boat Sail/Blade Storage - LSC has several new (to us) Club Boats. Additional storage for blades and sails has been created in the Laser/Sunfish Sail Shed. - Thanks Jim Fletcher and Pat Dolan

Fix Water Leak -Thanks Chuck Amboy.
