Damien at the Helm

Damien Sheppard Has Big Deput as Lightning Skipper

Damien Sheppard made his deput as a Lightning skipper Sunday (July 5) and had a very good day including a second and a third. Also new Lightning crew member, Sue McIntosh, sailed in the front of "Wind Dancer" and went home able to claim a first place finish on her first day of racing.

Light and variable conditions prevailed, challenging the race committee's ability to set a course. And, in the first race a wind shift just before the start made the race pretty much a parade. The second and third races found the wind a little more cooperative - although it seemed to come from all points of the compass at some time during the races.

Mike Moody, sailing with Susanna Wagner and John Kolstoe led all skippers with two first place finishes and one second place finish.

Several of Stephen Wagner's fabulous pictures are shown here, and the rest (96 total) can be seen at:

Junior Sailing on Tuesday Evenings

For the next five weeks, Tuesday evenings will be dedicated to Junior Sailing. Any Junior Sailors that have participated in camps this year or who have completed the Level 1 Sailing Certification in previous years are welcome to participate. Instructors will be on hand to help sailors complete their certification, run some on-water activities and oversee the evening of sailing.

LSC is on Twitter

The Lansing Sailing Sailing Club is now on Twitter. Anyone with internet access can view our page at http://twitter.com/lansingsailing - and for other twitterers, there are additional advantages.

One advantage is that you can set up your Twitter account to receive LSC Updates as text messages on your cell phone (standard text messaging rates apply). We plan to use updates to broadcast information on race day sailing conditions.

Anyone can join Twitter at no cost. Click the box that says "Join Today". To configure your account for updates to be sent to you as text messages:

  • Sign in to your Twitter account.
  • Click "Settings" in the menu bar at the top of the page.
  • Click "Devices" in the menu bar at the top of the Settings Page.
  • Enter your cell phone number in the box, preceeded by "+1". For example:
       +15173399030
  • Click the box for "It's ok for Twitter to send txt messages to my phone..."
  • Click on "Save"
  • You will see a message asking you to verify your cell phone number by sending a text message to 40404. The contents of the message are a code word that is displayed.

Now, configure your Twitter Account to "follow" LSC:

  • Sign in to your Twitter account if you aren't already signed in.
  • Go to http://twitter.com/lansingsailing
  • Click the "Follow" box that appears below the LSC Logo. A box saying "Following - Device updates OFF" should appear. Click in this "Following" box.
  • Click the "On" button for "Device updates".

You are now set to receive LSC updates as text messages on your cell phone. Don't forget that you will be charged for any text messages you receive from Twitter at your standard text messaging rate.

Wednesday Racing Turns "LSC" into "Lansing Supper Club" Again

Last Wednesday's Laser racing was cancelled due to lack of wind. This is the fourth time this year that lack of wind as found sailors on their way to an early dinner at Spagnoulas.

So far, Neil Harrison is the front runner amoung Sunfish sailors for the first place season trophy. For the Laser sailors, it is Doug Carlson out in front. However, the season is still young and we expect to have a lot more Wednesday racing where the wind actually blows - so plan on coming out to sail.

In the race quiz contest for 2009, pitting Quizmaster Doug Carlson against all comers, there was a tie for last Wednesday's quiz. For the season, the sailors are slightly ahead of the Quizmaster - but we all know how difficult it can be to get the answer right.

Standings and race results are posted on the website by our infamous "Scoring Guy". From the home page at www.lansingsailing.org, click on "Racing" - then click on the Laser or Sunfish Fleet Icon.

Pick a Job to Do

As all Lansing Sailing Club members know, the Club thrives because of the willingness of our members to take on jobs that need to be done. Here is a list of some tasks that need attention right now. To volunteer contact Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher (email: janef@tir.com, phone: 517-655-2174) or Commodore Pat Dolan (email: commodore@lansingsailing.org, phone: 517-214-6568). They will arrange for you to get complete details on what needs to be done.

Oversee Electical Box Overhaul - breakers are tripping and we need to determine what needs to be done to resolve this, obtain cost estimates and oversee getting the work done once Board of Directors approval is obtained for expenditures.

Cement Work Estimate - estimates are needed for launch ramp repair, seawall reconstruction and construction of a pad for the Racing Equipment Shed.

Life Preserver Storage - an improved storage system for Lansing Sailing Club pfds needs to be prepared.

Jobs Done Recently - Thank You

Sunfish Racks Built - Storage for twelve Sunfish has been created in new racks. In the lower portion, dollys can easily be used to get the boats to and from the launch area. Boats stored on the upper part of the rack must be lifted, and requires two people to get the boat on and off the rack. - Thanks Jim Fletcher and Pat Dolan

Club Boat Sail/Blade Storage - LSC has several new (to us) Club Boats. Additional storage for blades and sails has been created in the Laser/Sunfish Sail Shed. - Thanks Jim Fletcher and Pat Dolan

Fix Water Leak -Thanks Chuck Amboy.
