Water Problem at LSC Fixed

Thanks to Chuck Amboy, the leak in our water line at the Club has been fixed. Chuck has also taken charge of creating an insulation system to mitigate against future occurances.

Sunfish Regatta Won by Lake Forest's Scott Schappe

Glassy Start

Board Inspection

A small but determined group of sailors gathered at Lansing Sailing Club for its annual Sunfish Regatta. Waking to rain, cool temperatures and a glassy lake, the prospects of running any races was dim. The out-of-towners started rolling in; the race committee stood at the end of the dock watching for signs of wind and discussions ensued of what would constitute a regatta, over donuts and bagels.

The rain stopped and at 11:30 a.m. the group finally rigged and got one race in under very light conditions before deciding to go in for lunch and see if any wind developed in the afternoon. During lunch a slight but steady breeze came up and the sailors decided to go for it. As the light and steady breeze diminished and shifted as much as 180 degrees at times, the challenged race committee got in 3 more races before the 4:00 p.m. time limit.

Traveling all the way from Lake Forest, IL to participate in his first Lake Lansing Sunfish Regatta, Scott Schappe walked off with 1st prize with 4 bullets. Dan Norton from Devils Lake took 2nd, Gail Turluck from Richland took 3rd, and Tom Katterheinrich from New Knoxville, OH took 4th.

Special thanks to race committee Sid Mook, Blaine Severin, Mike Moody and Paul Davis who conquered the winds to set a fair course throughout the day. Also, thanks to Julie Pierce for handling registration, Mary Beth Fletcher for providing lunch and Neil Harrison for stepping in as “scoring guy” for the event.

As participants relaxed with beers in hand, donated by our sponsor Michigan Brewing Company, all were glad to have the day over with and thoughts of better wind for next year danced in everyone’s heads as they headed home.

Carlson and Fletcher Chalk Up Wins

Last Wednesday's Laser racing was led by Doug Carlson, who racked up four bullets. Mike Moody had a 2-3-2-2 evening to be Doug's closest competitor followed by tom Hutton's 5-2-3-3.

For the Sunfish fleet, Jim Fletcher dominated with three wins and a second. Neil Harrison scored the other first place finish and added three seconds. Dennis Dudley and Dave Vietti each had two thirds and two fourths.

Junior Sailing Camps Off to Great Start
New Camps Begin

Ten Junior Sailors got the 2009 Camp season off to a great start. Instructors Susan Swift and Brandon Deshler made it a fun week as the sailors developed enough skill to sail across the lake and back at the end of the week - stopping at the Cone Zone on the way.

Camps continue for the next three weeks. Spots are filling up, but there is still room. For more information and details on how to sign up, send an email to juniorsailing@lansingsailing.org or go to www.lansingsailing.org and click on "Junior Sailing" in the left hand navagation menu.

"Wind Dancer" Wins Two By Going Right

The boats that went right in Sunday's Lightning racing were rewarded. "Wind Dancer", sailed by Pat Dolan and Gil Chesbro banged the right corner in races one and three, led at the windward mark and held off charging boats to win those two races.

Blaine Severin, Julie Pierce and Tom Deits hit the right side in race two while everyone else pursued the mirage of wind on the left side. They won race two.

The "Moody's Booty" crew of Mike Moody, Susanna Wagner and Ron Marshall were the most consistent boat on the water with three second place finishes.

The Race Committee set a course last Sunday for Lightning sailors for a wind that was coming from the South. By the time the first race started, it was coming from the West. Suddenly it was from the North - then the South and then the North again.

Pick a Job to Do

As all Lansing Sailing Club members know, the Club thrives because of the willingness of our members to take on jobs that need to be done. Here is a list of some tasks that need attention right now. To volunteer contact Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher (email: janef@tir.com, phone: 517-655-2174) or Commodore Pat Dolan (email: commodore@lansingsailing.org, phone: 517-214-6568). They will arrange for you to get complete details on what needs to be done.

Oversee Electical Box Overhaul - breakers are tripping and we need to determine what needs to be done to resolve this, obtain cost estimates and oversee getting the work done once Board of Directors approval is obtained for expenditures.

Cement Work Estimate - estimates are needed for launch ramp repair, seawall reconstruction and construction of a pad for the Racing Equipment Shed.

Life Preserver Storage - an improved storage system for Lansing Sailing Club pfds needs to be prepared.

Club Boat Sail/Blade Storage - LSC has several new (to us) Club Boats. Additional storage for blades and sails needs to be created in the Laser/Sunfish Sail Shed.
