"And they're off"

Wednesday Racing Underway - Siegle and Vietti Shine

"It was pretty exciting out there ," said Laser Fleet Captain Doug Carlson. "The Race Committee was so busy helping capsized boats that we finished the first race and reported our own finishing position." And so the 2009 Wednesday Racing season is off to a good start. With 80 degree temps, no one was complaining about a refreshing swim when the boat went over.

George Siegle led the Laser fleet with two firsts, a second and a third. Dave Vietti posted two wins to lead the Sunfish. In all, eleven boats participated in the inaugural event.

Standings and race results will be posted on the website soon by our infamous "Scoring Guy". From the home page at www.lansingsailing.org, click on "Racing" - then click on the Laseer or Sunfish Fleet Icon.

Spend Memorial Day at LSC

The first holiday event of the season will be next Monday with the Memorial Day Picnic. Action starts at noon. Bring a dish to pass. LSC will provide Brats/Chicken/Hot Dogs, soft drinks, paper plates and plastic goods.

Doug Carlson and Ron Marshall have agreed to head up the picnic side of things while Jim Fletcher has agreed to have a great on-the-water activity for everyone to enjoy.

Junior Sailing Camps Sign-Up

Nifty LSC "Sailing Camp" yard signs are appearing near schools, parks and busy intersections. The Club is running Weekly Sailing Camps for students going into grades 5 through 12 from mid-June through mid-July.

Olav Messerschmidt, our Junior Sailing Director for 2009 has arranged for outstanding instructors - now we need to get the word out about this great opportunity for kids. Please let your friends and neighbors know about the camps and encourage them to go to our website for more information and details on how to sign up.

Thanks to Susanna Wagner for the artwork.

Learning to Tie a Stopper Knot

Adult "Learn to Sail" Sessions Underway

The first adult "Learn to Sail" session for 2009 is underway at the Lansing Sailing Club with eleven participants. Sessions are on Thursday evenings from 6 to 8."I didn't expect to be on the water sailing so soon," said one participant, expecting to spend several sessions of "shore school". LSC believes that people learn sailing best by getting on the water as soon as possible.

The next "Learn to Sail" sessions for adults will begin in mid-June. Contact Commodore Pat Dolan by email at commodore@lansingsailing.org or call him at 517-214-6568 to inquire about participating.

Moody Dominates Sunday Lightnings

It was a small, but hardy group of Lightning crews that showed up to sail last Sunday. With some winds above 20, three races were still sailed. "Moody's Booty" let the way with three wins. Mike Moody was ably assisted by Susanna Wagner and John Kolstoe.

Skipper Blaine Severin with crew Julie Pierce and Tom Deits posted two seconds and a third. And, in the third boat, it was Larry Koster driving with Deon Clairborne and Cassie Guarino conspiring to post a second and two thirds.

As usual, standings and race results are posted on the website. From the home page at www.lansingsailing.org, click on "Racing" - then click on the Lightning Fleet Icon.

Pick a Job to Do

As all Lansing Sailing Club members know, the Club thrives because of the willingness of our members to take on jobs that need to be done. Here is a list of some tasks that need attention right now. To volunteer contact Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher (email: janef@tir.com, phone: 517-655-2174) or Commodore Pat Dolan (email: commodore@lansingsailing.org, phone: 517-214-6568). They will arrange for you to get complete details on what needs to be done.

Install Seagull/Geese Preventer - install preventers on the dock to keep seagulls and geese off.

Oversee Electical Box Overhaul - breakers are tripping and we need to determine what needs to be done to resolve this, obtain cost estimates and oversee getting the work done once Board of Directors approval is obtained for expenditures.

Cement Work Estimate - estimates are needed for launch ramp repair, seawall reconstruction and construction of a pad for the Racing Equipment Shed.

Life Preserver Storage - an improved storage system for Lansing Sailing Club pfds needs to be prepared.

Club Boat Sail/Blade Storage - LSC has several new (to us) Club Boats. Additional storage for blades and sails needs to be created in the Laser/Sunfish Sail Shed.

Race Rule Changes: Sailing Below Proper Course

Note: Every four years the Racing Rules undergo major revisions. This series covers some of the most important changes that are in effect for this season.

The old rule required a boat sailing downwind to avoid sailing below her proper course when a nearby boat clear astern set a course to sail to leeward of her. This rule has been eliminated - making it a little more difficult to pass a boat that is ahead of you.

The illustration shows a Red boat on a course to sail to leeward of the Green boat. With the recent rule changes, Green is now permitted to defend herself against being overtaken by getting in position to luff the boat behind.

In the next issue, we will look at the "Slam Dunk ".
