Adult Learn to Sail Starts May 14

The Lansing Sailing Club's 2009 Adult Learn to Sail program starts Thursday evening May 14th. A good group has already signed up, but there is more space available.

For more information, check out the "Adult Learn to Sail" page of the LSC website at www.lansingsailing.org. To sign up, contact Commodore Pat Dolan by email at commodore@lansingsailing.org or call him at 517-214-6568.

Lightning Crews Spread Glory Around

With highly variable wind conditions prevailing, all the Lightning Crews found opportunity and glory. "Wind Dancer" did her circle after fouling "Bananas" just after the start, but then got in phase and hit every shift to pull in front and win race one. Pat Dolan, Bob Miller and Gil Chesbro went on to win Race two as well, but slipped to third in the final race.

Jonathan Ahlbrand, Tom Hutton and Nikiforos Delatolas took a while to get "Bananas" going. However, after a fifth in the first race, they jumped to second in the second and brought home a win in the third - just edging out "Splash" at the finish line.

"Splash" was driven by Brad Kleihege while Jim and Maribeth Fletcher handled crewing duties. After a 4th and 5th, they pushed the leader hard in race three and almost caught them at the end.

The "Bo Jangles" crew of Merrick Hurlbutt, Robert Mosher and Scott Watkins had a 3-4-4 day. Sporting new sails, they had great upwind speed. They also exhibited some solid sailing to avoid "Wind Dancer" as a big gust caught both boats by surprise with spinnakers flying. "Wind Dancer" went into an out-of-control round up right in front of "Bo Jangles", but good work by Hurlbutt and crew enabled them to pass by safely.

Mike Moody had crew aboard that hadn't worked together before. However, Susan Peters and Julie Pierce turned in a solid performance to help "Moody's Booty" score a second and third before struggling to a fifth in the final race.

It was a very nice day on the water. Sunshine for the most part and interesting wind conditions to test strategy and tactics skills of the crews.

Lightnings Race Next on Thursday - Regatta is Saturday

Lightning sailors are reminded that the next race day is this Thursday, May 7. There will be no racing on Mother's Day, but Lightnings will resume Sunday racing on May 17. The first race starts Thursday at 6:30. No Skipper's Meeting is planned, so report on the water.

This coming Saturday, will be the annual Lightning Regatta on Lake Lansing. This one day "Tune Up" regatta is traditionally the first Lightning Regatta in the Michigan Lightning District season. Click here for more information.

Race Rule Changes: The Zone

Note: Every four years the Racing Rules undergo major revisions. This series covers some of the most important changes that are in effect for this season.

One of the most important changes in the Racing Rules is that the "Zone" is now three hull lengths and applies only at marks. The old zone was two lengths and applied both at marks and obstructions.

The illustration at right shows some of the important elements of the Zone rule:

1. The zone is defined by the length of the hull of the boat that is nearest the mark. Here the green boat is nearest the mark, so it is her hull length that defines the zone.

2. The hull is the key - not equipment in normal position such as a spinnaker. Here the red boat's spinnaker may be closer to the mark than the green boat's spinnaker, but it is the red boat's hull that determines when she reaches the zone - not her spinnaker. Equipment (such as a spinnaker) in normal position is used to determine overlaps with other boats, but not to determine the "zone".

Exceptions: The two hull length zone continues to apply for match racing and for team racing. Also, the new rules permit sailing instructions for a regatta to specify a two length or a four length zone instead of three lengths.

In the next issue, we will look at "Mark-Room".

Volvo Fleet Now at Boston

The Volvo Ocean Racing fleet has completed the 4900 mile leg from Rio to Boston. Seven boats are parked at Fan Pier and were officially welcomed by thousands of sailing fans last Friday.

Puma, the USA team led by Ken Reed, is in third place after this leg, a half point behind Telephonica Blue.

There will be an "In-Port" race at 1 pm on May 9th. On May 16th, the fleet leaves Boston on Leg 7 for Galway.

Race Shed Roof Gets a Cleaning

Chuck Amboy put his power washer to work on the Race Shed roof and cleaned off lots of lichen and moss. Although the shingles are aging, Chuck found no leaking - so it looks like the may be another year or two of life in that roof.

Thanks Chuck.
