Wind Dancer Crew Gets Ready for Sponge War

Labor Day was a fun day at the Lansing Sailing Club. Bill and Sally Pratt took charge of the event and made sure the picnic was a success with grilled brats, chicken and hot dogs. There was plenty of great food brought by the picnicers including some yummy desserts.

Then Mike Moody led the group onto the water for a Sponge War. Hit a sail for 20 points, hit the boat for 10 points, catch a sponge thrown by another boat for points. And the sponges flew so furiously that the judges had a hard time keeping up with the scoring. With each pass, a fusillade of sponges was thrown - and most hit their mark.

In the end, teams could increase their point total by betting some or all on whether they could sail their boat backward between two marks. "Wind Dancer" was their first to accomplish the sail backward goal, but eventually everyone was successful.

Back at the Clubhouse, Moody announced a six way tie - the first ever in a sponge event. But there was a solution - a tie breaker marble game. Eventually Scott and Adrianne Watkins won the tiebreaker and a nice dinner at Hersheys.

Everyone, including kids from 1 to much older had a great time. Thanks to everyone for participating.

Carlson Beats Out Moody and Messerschmidt for Laser Honors

Lasers get off the start line

During the 2008 season, three names were consistently next to the number "1" in the finish order: Olav Messerschmidt was there nine times and Mike Moody twelve times. Fourteen times however, it was Doug Carlson and this helped propel Carlson to the Laser 2008 Fleet Title.

Wednesday was no different with one of these three winning each of the races. Messerschmidt won the first race, Carlson won the final race, and Moody won the two in between.

This was a banner year for the Laser Fleet. Eight boats was the fewest that sailed on a Wednesday evening, and the average was above eleven. Fifteen boats found their way to the start line one evening.

In addition to the big three, eight others qualified for season trophies: George Siegle, Susanna Wagner, Blaine Severin, Pat Dolan, Bob Miller, Scott Watkins, Aaron Picot and John McEnhill. Three others were within three races of qualifying.

Looking for Board Members

At the upcoming November Annual Meeting, members will elect the 2009 Board of Directors. Anyone interested in running for office - or wanting to nominate someone for office should contact Commodore Pat Dolan. Eight of the ten positions on the Board are open. Offices to be filled include Commodore, Vice-Commodore, Rear-Commodore, Secretary, Treasurer, Club Boat Director, Facility Director and Member at Large.

Gil Chesbro Wins Sunfish Title

Sunfish work to windward

On the final day of racing Wednesday, Gil Chesbro added two more first place finishes and two more seconds to build a winning total of 189 points for the 2008 season. Second place honors went to Neil Harrison with 177 points.

Third place season honors went to John Fishbeck with 160 points. Fishbeck added two firsts and a second to his total on Wednesday.

Also qualifying for hardware this year were Dave Vietti with 108 points and Dennis Dudley with 88 points.

Sailors receive points for their finishing positions based on the number of boats sailing in that race. They must sail at least 20 races to qualify for a season trophy in the Sunfish Fleet.

Get Bills to Treasurer

Treasurer Dave MacKenzie asks that anyone having outstanding bills, get them to him for payment. Simply put them in the Treasurer's box at the Club. During the next few weeks Treasurer Dave and the Board of Directors will be preparing a proposed 2009 budget for the November Annual Meeting.
