Harrison, Fletcher and Chesbro in close quarters

Fifteen Lasers and six Sunfish were on the water Wednesday and lots of them came away with wins. The Lasers got three races in, won by Doug Carlson, Olav Messerschmidt and George Siegle. For the Sunfish, Gil Chesbro won two while Neil Harrison and Dave Vietti each took a first.

A mild easterly wind meant that the course had to be set toward the middle of the lake and it took a while to get the first race off as the wind was backing from South to East. Then, after each race, there was a need to move the course as the wind backed. The result was only three races for the Lasers and the Sunfish finishing with a short windward-leeward.

Race two provided a little capsize excitement - despite the soft winds. As Dolan went around the gybe mark, his roll caught him too far out and the boat came over on top of him when he couldn't get back in the cockpit. He went from fifth to fifteenth in a hurry. However, by the end of the race, he climbed back to ninth and just missed eighth by inches.

In race three, George Siegle was in the middle of the fleet coming around the first leeward mark and he continued on port for about a hundred yards - despite everyone else tacking on what looked like a favored starboard course. The wind chose that time to shift right and George caught his own stream directly to the mark, passing everyone in front of him. He held on easily to win.

Chris Strugar-Fritsch was on the water racing for the first time this year after back surgery. Welcome back Chris.

For the Sunfish, Chesbro had a third to go with his two bullets while Harrison added a couple of seconds to go with his win. Dave Vietti also added a second place to his win. Dennis Dudley took a second and two thirds. Maribeth Fletcher had a third to complete the top three finishers.

Back to Lasers, Mike Moody was consistent with three third place finishes, Messerschmidt had a second and fourth to go with his win, and Carlson added a couple of two spots to his top finish. Fourth place finishes were also registered by Siegle and Blaine Severin.

Join in the Thursday Adult Sail

For the rest of the season Thursday evenings are Adult Sail night at the Lansing Sailing Club.

The idea is to provide an opportunity for members to come out and sail at a time when (hopefully) there are others that want to enjoy some on-water camaraderie.

In addition, the Commodore and/or others will be on hand to help anyone still learning or have questions.

Regular members will usually sail their own boats. For Associate Members, the Club Boats are available as well. In addition, the Commodore's boat is usually available.

Up until recently, the Thursday evening emphasis has been our Adult "Learn to Sail" program. However, now that people have learned to sail, we are looking for a way to provide additional ways for them to be on the water.

No reservations are necessary.

Laser Regatta this Saturday

The annual Lake Lansing Laser Regatta will be held this Saturday, August 23rd. Laser sailors from throughout the midwest are expected to take part.

Registration begins at 8 am with a skipper's meeting scheduled for 9:30 and first race at 10 am.

There will be a spectator boat for anyone wanting to get on the water. Spectators should be available about 9:45 when the spectator boat leaves the dock or as the snack break concludes. For spectators not able to be available at these times, use the radio to attract the Race Committee's attention and the spectator boat will make arrangements for pick up. The spectator boat will be doing double duty as safety boat and mark boat, so it may not be possible to satisfy specific spectator requests for positioning - but they will do their best.

There will be no racing after 4 pm. Cook your own Chicken/Steak BBQ and a trophy presentation will follow the on-water activity.
