"Wind Dancer" gets her spinnaker flying

The weather channel forecast 15 mile an hour winds for Sunday afternoon Lightning racing - and they were all of that with some gusts in the 20s. John LeFevre, from his third place vantage point in the final race, watched as both "UFP" and "Wind Dancer" were almost capsized by one big gust just yards from the finish line. "Both boats looked a little out of control for a moment", said LeFevre. However, the crews managed to hold on and keep the boats upright.

In the first race, Tom Hutton, Nikiforos Delatolas and Robert Mosher got a very good start to windward of the fleet in "Oh m" with great speed. However, "Wind Dancer" was to leeward and eventually her backwind forced Hutton and crew to tack away. This crew had several very good starts on the day. However, an uncooperative spinnaker halyard made flying their chute impossible after the first downwind - and that left them bringing up fourth place each time - despite some very good moments.

John LeFevre got the travel cover off "Sail Fevre" and the mast up in time to participate. Luke Bowman and Michelle LeFevre were aboard. They had some excellent windward legs, but fell back to spinnaker flyers on the downwinds. They wrapped up the day with tripple threes.

Tom Deits and John Kolstoe sailed with Blaine Severin on "UFP". Some starting problems put them behind the eight ball. However, they kept fighting back and racked up three second place finishes for the day. Blaine and crew caught "Wind Dancer" on the first downwind in race two - flying her spinnaker while Dolan and crew left theirs in the bag thinking that they would be on a close reach after a wind shift as they reached the windward mark. However, when it was clear that the shift was only temporary and "UFP" was handling their spinnaker with no problem, "Wind Dancer" gybed quickly to starboard, ran their chute up as they gybed back and set about defending against "UFP's" onslaught. Using their leeward advantage, "Wind Dancer" pushed "UFP" away from the mark on port gybe, then did a takedown as they gybed back for the mark leaving "UFP" a boat length behind. With careful coverage, "Wind Dancer" went on to win. On the day, Dolan, Miller and Chesbro scored three first place finishes.

Moonlight Sail Friday - August 15th

The last Moonlight Sail for 2008 will be this coming Friday, August 15th.

This is one day before the full moon, so the 8:10 moonrise should be spectacular.

As usual, the protocol is to arrive at 8 pm with a small dessert to share and the beverage of your choice.

Soon after dessert we'll be on the water to enjoy the moon rising over the trees behind the Lansing Sailing Club's Clubhouse.

Don't worry about not having a boat to sail that is appropraite to this kind of event, there is usually plenty of room on someone's boat - or on the Club's Pontoon boat. Sometimes another pontoon boat shows up too.

LSC "Olympic" Sailing Games - Tueday - 6 pm to dusk - Everyone Join In

LSC Olympic
Sailing Games
Tuesday
August 12, 2008

With the Olympic Games getting a lot of TV coverage, the Lansing Sailing Club is having its own version this coming Tuesday evening, August 12th, from 6:00 to Dusk. Everyone is invited to participate.

Remember, sailing skill takes second place to enthusiasm, a desire to have fun - and maybe a willingness to get a little wet. The Commodore will no doubt get wet - because he will be the one on the plank for a sailing game called "The Commodore Walks the Plank".

It will be good fun for everyone. Plan to be there and participate.

The Regatta That Wasn't

Former LSC Members Matt and Andrea Dahline
and Family at Bay City

LSC Larry Koster writes this report from the Bay City Lightning Regatta, held Saturday and Sunday, August 9-10.

After having no racing on Saturday due to storms, there were no Lightning races on Sunday either. Waves out of the Bay City YC on Saginaw Bay were 6 to 8 feet. We packed up at left the yacht club at 10:20 am for our 98 mile drive back to Lansing. The home folks covered their boats and called it a day too!

Shibumi, with crew of Gary Marx and Matt Dahline, was the only visitor boat at the Bay City YC's regatta. All the boats were set up and ready to launch Saturday when a dark weather system moved towards the yacht club from the northwest. Boat covers were quickly put in place and within moments a drenching downpour appeared.

By then everyone is under the tent, somewhat dry except for shoes and feet from the very wet grass. My guess, 2-3 inches of rain. Skippers' meeting postponed until 2 pm. Most of the crews adjourn to the "Buffalo Wings" on Wilder Road for lunch, then return for the 2 pm skippers' meeting.

Many regatta stories float around. Mostly about Matt Dahline, Chris Jacobson and Blaine Severin, at home and away at various regattas! Lots of laughs!

Another postponement, then cancellation of races for Saturday. The plan was to have 3 races Saturday and two on Sunday. As a courtesy to the visitors, Matt Princing asked us if we were willing to sail 3 races on Sunday with no races to begin after 2 pm, instead of the usual "no races after 1 pm." The decision was fine with us. I would say at least 3 weather systems moved through the Saginaw Bay area, one after another. The hand held devices, I-Phones, etc., were very helpful for decision making by the Race Committee.

All in all, it was a great weekend, but no sailing. As usual, BCYC had very nice door prizes. The skipper of Shibumi received a very nice 'tail-gating' camping style chair for being the only visitor boat and crew. It has side pockets for all sorts of goodies and a fold-up shelf to hold a beverage. And there was an assortment of other door prizes. The attachment is a photo of Matt & Andrea, her uncle from Germany and their children.
