LSC Olympic
Sailing Games
Tuesday
August 12, 2008

The Olympic Games have started - and this coming Tuesday evening, August 12th, from 6:00 to Dusk is an event not to miss. It's the Lansing Sailing Club Olympic Sailing Games. You will particularly want to join in "The Commodore Walks the Plank" game - where the Commodore tries to stay dry while sailors pelt him with some wet sponges.

All members, Junior Sailors and Adults are invited to join in the fun. We will divide into teams and compete in some fun sailing games - like the "Cannonball Run" game where sailors try to hit a target with their cannonballs while sailing by.

This is the final evening of Junior Sailing for 2008 too - so we hope a lot of our Junior Sailors will join in the fun.

No sailing skill is necessarily required. You will just need to have a lot of enthusiasm, a desire to have a good time - and maybe a willingness to get wet.

Other Games will include

  • The Pirate Relay
  • Circle of Death
  • Synchronized Sailing

It will be good fun for everyone. Plan to be there and participate.

Sunfish Sailors Enjoy a Beautiful Evening of Wind

The time Gil Chesbro has spent cleaning and buffing his boat, along with some solid sailing, is paying off for him. After a third place start in the first Sunfish Race Wednesday, Gil ran off three first place finishes to lead the fleet.

Neil Harrison and John Fishbeck put in their usual good effort and divided second place finishes between them. Fishbeck won the first race.

Dennis Dudley and Michael-Salomon Jost will also see their names in the State Journal with third place finishes among their results.

Jonathan Ahlbrand, Alanna Harvey and Thomas Jost rounded out the Sunfish Fleet Wednesday.

Stephen Wagner will be posting pictures of last Wednesday's racing soon. Look for them at:

Close Laser Competition at the Top, in the Middle and with Newcomers

Eleven Lasers took advantage of a nice breeze Wednesday to have some close sailing.

There were a number of very close finishes. Aaron Picot nipped Pat Dolan at the end of the final race as one example.

The top three spots in each race were shared by Olav Messerschmidt (1-1-3-2), Mike Moody (3-3-1-1) and Doug Carlson (2-2-2-3). After that however, there were a lot of sailors sharing top spots. Blaine Severin, Pat Dolan, and Susanna Wagner each had fourth place finishes. Brad Kleihege had a very consistent 7-6-5-6 night.

Newcomeres Susan Peters, Jo McGlew, Aaron Picot and John McEnhill were a very competitive group and continue to rapidly improve their sailing.

Complete results and standings can be found on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org. Click on "Racing" then on the fleet symbol.

Lack of Wind Last Sunday Opened Up Time to Study Rack Storage Options

There was occasionally some wind last Sunday, but mostly drifting conditions caused the Lightning sailors to postpone their scheduled start for an hour in hopes a breeze would fill in.

When it didn't, the sailors decided to cancel racing for the day.

A group did spend their time productively working out a method of utilizing a second rack tier for Sunfish and Laser storage. A prototype is being put together for selected members to test. If the approach works, we hope to have all the boats on racks for next year. Cross your fingers.

Complete results and standings can be found on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org. Click on "Racing" then on the fleet symbol.
