LSC Olympic
Sailing Games
Tuesday
August 12, 2008

Put Tuesday evening, August 12th, from 6:00 to Dusk on your calendar to be at the Lansing Sailing Club and join in our version of the Olympic Sailing Games.

This is the final evening of Junior Sailing for 2008 and everyone is invited to come and help celebrate the success of our Junior Sailors - Junior Sailors and all our veteran sailors too.

It will be a lot of fun. No sailing skill is necessarily required - just a lot of enthusiasm, a willingness to get wet and a desire to have a good time.

We'll be dividing into several teams and the teams will compete against each other in such on water events as "Circle of Death", "Pirate Relay", "Synchronized Sailing" and the ever popular "Walk the Plank ".

This will be great fun for Junior Sailors and veterans alike. Plan to be there and participate.

Twelve Capsizes Enliven Wednesday Laser Racing

It was a George Siegle kind of day - lots of wind - and you could see the smile on George's face from the moment he drove into the Club.

Yes, wind and whitecaps were plentiful Wednesday as sailors gathered for racing. Although there were some timid souls, eight Laserites found their way to the starting line. They had a good time and provided plenty of entertainment for those watching from the shore as thirteen capsizes were noted in the Laser Fleet.

George won the first race and the last race to sandwich a DNF and a third.

Doug Carlson took race two as he posted a 2-1-2-3 day.

Olav Messeerschmidt went home with the other win - a Race 3 gem where he jumped into the lead and kept extending.

Mike Moody sailed well, but was the victim several times of fouls by other boats. At a leeward mark rounding, a boat failed to keep clear and Mike's boom hit the other boat - with the effect that the sail was "pulled in" during a huge gust. Mike capsized and the other boat then sailed into Mike's cockpit. Later, at the windward mark, Mike was on starboard, but had to take evasive action as two Laser sailors came in on Port with nowhere to turn. The result was another capsize and chaos for almost th entire fleet trying to avoid becoming involved. Even with all this to hold him back, Mike still had a 3-DNF-4-5 evening.

Two other sailors had top three finishes. Nikiforos Delatolas had a couple of second place finishes. He is no stranger to heavy air as that is what he sees much of the time back home in Greece. Susanna Wagner had a third in Race 2 as she managed to avoid wiping out when many of the other sailors were involved in carnage.

Complete results and standings can be found on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org. Click on "Racing" then on the fleet symbol.

Stephen Wagner has again honored us with his camera. Some great pictures of last Wednesday's racing are posted at:

Fishbeck and Harrison Lead Sunfish Sailors

Only three capsizes were noted among the Sunfish sailors on Wednesday evening as they seemed to manage the exciting conditions a little better than their Laser comrades. The result was that each sailor scored at least one top three finish.

John Fishbeck and Neil Harrison each won two races to lead their fleet. Fishbeck added a second and a third to record a solid night. Harrision didn't make the first race, but was second in Race 3 to complete his day on the water.

Dave Vietti had a third in the first race and Michael-Salomon Jost had a second in Race 2.

Jonathan Ahlbrand was in a Sunfish this week and posted a second in Race 1 and a third in Race 3.
