Connor Frost and Aaron Messerschmidt

Tuesday evening is Junior Sailing night at the Lansing Sailing Club through mid-August - and last Tuesday's group was treated to a beautiful evening on the water. Where it may have been hot elsewhere, the wind coming across the water made being on Lake Lansing very pleasant.

In addition to Club owned boats, some of our Sunfish members have made their boat available for the kids to use - so everyone can be on the water.

Brad Kleihege, one of our Junior Sailors who is working in a Laser has most of the basics down - thanks in part to Olav Messerschmidt who has been coming out and sailing his Laser alongside to demonstrate some of the techniques.

Aaron Messerschmidt came a little late - so he hopped on board with Conner Frost. The two of them hiking really made the boat go.

Jack Peters led the group of Sunfish sailors up the lake while brother Nick gave his dad a ride. Afterward, Coach Dolan asked Nick what kind of job his dad did trimming the sail. A thumbs up sign was the answer - perhaps influenced by an upcoming decision on whether to stop for ice cream on the way home.

All LSC Junior Sailors who have received their Level One Certification and Sunfish Certification are welcome to participate. They're on the water again next Tuesday evening at 6 pm.

Nancy Lewis: New Member Learning to Sail

Nancy Lewis sailing on a windy Monday

Nancy lewis is the newest member of the Lansing Sailing Club.

She called Commodore Pat Dolan last Sunday to say that she sailed as a kid on the Jersey shore and getting back into sailing is "on my bucket list".

On Monday, she was on the water as part of the LSC Adult "Learn to Sail" program - and showing that sailing is a lot like "riding a bicycle" in terms of remembering how to make the boat go.

There are some things that are new however, and Nancy fought with the hiking stick - something she didn't have on her boat growing up. She was a quick study though - rapidly assimilating the techniques involved in tacking while not letting go of the tiller extension and main sheet - and how to bring in the main sheet without letting go of the tiller.

Be sure to say "Hi" when you see Nancy and welcome her to the Club.

Lightning Sailors Get Breezed Sunday

Last Sunday's Lightning racing (July 13) was cancelled because of high winds. Quite of few were there to sail, but when winds were measured at consistently in the mid 20s, Nikiforos Delatolas rigged his Laser and showed the spectators how easy it was to handle conditions - NOT.

Complete results and standings can be found on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org.

Lansing Sailors on "Pickle Boat" for Mackinac Race

Dennis Dudley's "Sacrebleu", an Erickson 35, was home to four Lansing Sailing Club Members among a crew of eight for three days while enroute to Mackinac Island from Port Huron. Sailing in the "Cruising Class D" group, they left Port Huron on Saturday and pulled in to Mackinac at 6:10 pm Monday - the last boat to finish. They were greeted with lots of fanfare as always accompanies the "Pickle Boat" including plenty of offers of beer.

I'm sure we'll hear more about this trip from Dennis, John Fishbeck, John Quensen and Neil Harrison. The Wednesday sailors were treated to some snippits by Fishbeck at Spagnoulas - as only John can tell them. So we'll look forward to more detail.

Moonlight Sail this Friday

One of the two Moonlight Sails at the Lansing Sailing Club is on the schedule for Friday (July 18). All members and their guests are welcome. Bring a small dessert to share and the beverage of your choice at 8 pm. After dessert we'll head out on the water.

For members without boats to sail, there is plenty of space available - either on other boats or on the pontoon boat.

Come out and join in the fun. A moonrise with a full moon is a beautiful sight.

"That Made My Season"

Susan Peters going fast

Blaine Severin wasn't bashful about the results of the third race Wednesday evening (July 16). "That made my season," said Blaine as he posted a first place finish in a fleet of fourteen Lasers.

Doug Carlson had a very good night of sailing, with a 1-1-2-3 night and Mike Moody went 2-2-4-1 to account for the other race winners.

However, everyone was a winner with the natural air conditioning and nice breeze making for terrific sailing.

Junior Sailor Brad Kleihege was in a Laser and posted a couple of mid fleet finishs.

George Siegle (3-3-5-4), Scott Watkins (4-6-6-6) and Susanna Tellschow (5-DNR-7-6) had solid nights on the water. Susanna missed race two when she found her boat full of water and had to make a pit stop to find a plug.

Complete results and standings can be found on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org.

Fletcher in Charge

Jim Fletcher, in distance, splits from fleet

In the Sunfish Fleet on Wednesday, Jim Fletcher showed the way. His three first place finishes in a good field were decisive. Dave Vietti posted straight 2s across the board.

John Fishbeck went 3-3-4 before retiring as a storm front came in. Gil Chesbro accounted for the other first place finish of the evening as he went 4-4-3-1.

Complete results and standings can be found on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org.
