The "Bo Jangles II" Crew earlier this year |
Editor's Note: Blaine Severin provides this account of Sunday, June 29 Lightning Racing on Lake Lansing.
A typical day on Lake Lansing saw winds from the SW 6-12. It was a delightfully cool day for late June. In race 1, the SW winds were actually S to W. The "Unidentified Flying Pigs" ("UFP") with Blaine Severin, Neil Harrison, and Julie Pierce fought for the favored boat end of the line where they caught a strong lift. "UFP" never gave up the lead, but anxiously saw a powerful downwind finish by "Bananas" with Jonathon Alhbrand, Nickiforos Deltolas and Tom Hutton. Merrick Hurlbutt with the Watson crew finished 3rd in "Bojangles II".
Of course, by race 2, the wind had switched to the west and the course had to be reset. The start, however, saw a severe shift to the south, with the pin end favored by the entire length of the line. "UFP" caught a pin end start, and an initial lead that lasted until the big shift west. Larry Koster with Michael-Solomon Jost and Susan Peters took advantage of this shift to capture the lead. "Shibumi" went on to victory. Skipper Larry Koster was quoted on Monday morning, "The second race was a hell of a lot more fun than the other two." "Bojangles II" improved to second place and "UFP" was third.
Race 3 actually had a square line, and all boats started equally well. "UFP" found itself about three feet behind and 3 feet to windward of Bananas. "Bojangles II" did extremely well and improved to a first place finish. John Lefevre with Bob Miller and John Kolstoe held second place until the last downwind leg where they sailed right (to the S end of the course). They had done this twice before, to great benefit. However, the wind took up a northerly flavor as "UFP" and "Bananas" hit the rhumb line. "Bananas" is credited with an excellent display of spinnaker handling as Nickiforos was pressed into service as the spinnaker pole due to topping lift problems. "UFP" finished exactly where it started, three feet to windward and 3 feet behind "Bananas". "Sail Fevre" finished fourth, their gamble to the right of the course finally having let them down.
