"Moody's Booty" crew sets spin and takes off

Sean Fidler teamed with Mike Moody and Susanna Tellschow to sail "Moody's Booty" to Saturday's Lake Lansing Lightning Regatta. After posting a couple of seconds and a third, they finished strong, posting wins in the final two races to tie Craig Gable on the leader board. Both skippers ended up with 9 points. However, Fidler won by virtue of the tie breaker, winning the final race.

Craig sailed with son Nathan and JP Little. They got off to a fast start, winning the first two races before being relegated to seconds in races three and our - and a third in the final race. Criag also walked away with the Spartan Award for being the highest finishing MSU Alum.

The Michigan Brewing Company provided liquid refreshment for the sailors. Fleet Captain Blaine Severin was very complimentary of their support and encouraged everyone to return the favor by enjoying MBC products.

Top Lansing crew honors went to "Wind Dancer" as Pat Dolan, Bob Miller and Gil Chesbro teamed up to tie for fourth place with 23 points.

A total of ten boats participated in the regatta - and no one was complaining about a lack of wind. Although there were some lulls, their were gusts consistently in the high teens and low twenties. This proved to be a challenge for everyone, and four boats succumbed - putting their crews in the water. The Safety Boat was busy - and the Committee Boat had to get involved one time when there were three crews in the water at the same time.

Anticipating that the wind would build during the day, everyone agreed to sail all the races back to back - so most of the racing was completed in winds that were managable. Only toward the end did the crews face some tough hiking. It was a good thing too, as after sailing, there were winds consistently in the 20s with gusts in the 30s.

Detailed results and pictures taken by Stephen Wagner can be found on the Lansing Sailing Club website at

Sunday racing saw a number of skippers turn up without crew - and the 20 mph winds discouraged them from going on the water. As a result, there was no racing on Sunday.

Get Your Sunfish and Laser Ready for Wednesday

Doug Carlson, Laser Fleet Captain

Alanna Harvey, Sunfish Fleet Captain

OK Sunfish and Laser sailors. Get ready, get set and get ready to go Wednesday.

The wind is forecast to be 10-15 with temps to reach low 60s - perfect. So what if the water is a little cold.

There are three Club Sunfish available for members who don't own a Sunfish to use. there are also a couple of Club Lasers. Don't forget though - it's first come first sail on the Club Boats.

Doug Carlson will be defending his Laser Championship - and this is probably our last shot to drive him to the back of the fleet (like that's gunna happen). Doug is in the process of finalizing plans for his new place overlooking East Bay in Traverse.

On the Sunfish side of things, it's time to plot and scheme against Champ John Fishbeck. Maybe we can vote that he has to do two circles at any mark he leads the fleet. I'm sure others of you will have ideas too.

In any case, get Wednesdays on your calendar. Take charge of your life. What is more important than getting away for time with yourself and your sailing friends. See you Wed.
