Nick and Dave Vietti did a great job on Race Committee

Moody set up for the start

Mike Moody got Jason Grimes in the boat to crew and promptly sailed two almost perfect races to wrap up wins in Races 1 and 2 to go with a third in the final race. With a solid pin end start in the first race, they waited until everyone else had tacked away, then sailed all the way right. This paid off as the other boats struggled to get in phase and most lost ground with excessive tacking. Mike and Jason were first to the windward mark and held on for an easy win.

In the second race, "Moody's Booty" was again at the pin end of the line just as a huge left hand shift came in. They tacked immediately and crossed the fleet - with many of the other boats starting toward the boat end of the line in hopes of tacking away soon to take advantage of what looked like better wind on the right. Again they established a lead that held to the end.

Race three found another big left shift coming in just before the start and most boats unable to even make the line on starboard. With boats on their hip stalled, "Wind Dancer" took the opportunity to tack away and establish a quick lead they extended with each leg to wrap up a 3-2-1 evening of racing..

Michael-Salomon Jost got Susanna Wagner in the boat with him. They sailed well - particularly in the final race when they held off a hard charging "Moody's Booty" on the final leg to finish second.

Blaine Severin and Joe Mayfield sailed an excellent first race to post a second place finish on a 2-5-4 night. Blaine has been busy putting all the details together for the upcoming Lake Lansing Lightning Regatta a week from Saturday - the next sailing event on Lake Lansing.

John LeFevre had his regatta crew on board for a tune up in his first sail of the year. They hit the top three in race two, going 4-3-5. However, this doesn't represent how well they sailed for most of the night. They were among the leaders throughout much of the first leg in every race.

Lightning racing continues with the Regatta on Saturday, May 17th and Fleet racing on Sunday, May 18th. There will be no racing on Mother's Day.

Check Sail Shape With a Picture

A digital picture of the "Shibumi" main

Not sure whether your sails are trimmed properly? Try taking a picture and then use the seams to draw the shape for analysis. The lines in this picture were drawn in PowerPoint. Even if the entire sail isn't captured in the picture, it is possible to make a reasonable guess about where the lines should extend - as in the example.

In the picture, taken by Susanna Wagner while racing Thursday, blue lines have been drawn to show the shape of the sail in the middle of the sail and red lines to show the shape higher up.

Sometimes the pictures make it easy to pick up shape details that are hard to see while focusing on all the other dynamics of racing. Make adjustments the next time out and take more pictures to see if the changes had the desired effect.

Volunteers Needed to Give Sailboat Rides on May 31st

Once again the Lansing Sailing Club is participating in the "Be A Tourist in Your Own Town" event to be held on Saturday, May 31st. As in the past, we will be providing sailboat rides from 1-4pm.

Volunteers are needed to make this event a success as it has been for the last 2 years. We need the following:
  Skippers/boats
Alternate crew to assist skippers as needed
  Greeters/registration
  Parking/traffic control
  Safety/Life jacket queuing
  Dock Control/Boat catchers

Last year we had a good crowd and this year we anticipate even more. Three other Haslett organizations are also participating in the BATYOT event which may drive additional traffic. Please let Jonathan know if you can assist in this event. E-mail him at: ahlbrandj@comcast.net.
