Jonathan Ahlbrand Needs Help with "Quietwater"

It's Not Too Late to
Give the Gift of Sailing

Requests for 2008 Race Committee Sign-up will begin soon.

To kick off the pre-sailing season, the Lansing Sailing Club will be participating in the 2008 Quietwater Symposium on Saturday, March 1. Volunteers are needed to help with our booth. Members who are available to help are asked to contact Jonathan Ahlbrand at ahlbrandj@hotmail.com. Jonathan is the event coordinator for the LSC.

The "Quietwater Symposium" is an annual event sponsored is by the MSU College of agriculture and Natural Resources and is part of Agriculture Natural Resources Week.
  Date: Saturday March 1, 2008
Location: The Pavilion for Livestock and Agriculture Education (Farm Lane, south of Mt Hope - on the campus of MSU)
Time: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  Admission: Adults $8.00 - under 12 Free

While the event name is "Quietwater", the event draws a large variety of outdoor and environmental enthusiasts with interests that include: Kayaking, Sailing, Outdoor Photography, Fly Fishing, Cycling and even Dog Sledding. There are also special presentations on a variety of topics.

After the excitement we caused last year, the QWS people asked if we could help them expand the Sailing element of the show. To that end Jonathan has invited Nickels Boat Works and Rob Voight from Great Lakes Sailboat Company (boat dealer in East Lansing). Both are confirmed participants. Jonathan spoke to the Nickels folks while he was at the Strictly Sail show in Chicago and they plan to bring a Mutineer for their display.

Our core focus is to build awareness of sailing in the Lansing area and hopefully attract some potential new members, both sailing and canoe/kayak. Below is the description that will be in the event program.

"Discover Sailing in Lansing! Since 1963, The Lansing Sailing Club has promoted recreational sailing and non-motorized use of Lake Lansing. Sailboat racing, youth sailing instruction, numerous social events and a peaceful lake-front setting provide a family atmosphere that promotes low impact use of our local water resources. "

LSC will have a double sized booth with a table, chairs, and a computer/projector showing photos from our past season. We will also have a Sunfish on display (courtesy of Michael-Salomon Jost). Jonathan will be doing a presentation session entitled: "Basic Sailing Concepts: A Brief Introduction to the Sport."

Like last year, Jonathan is seeking volunteers to staff the booth for an hour or so throughout the day. Jonathan plans to be there for the entire day, but needs help and welcomes all participation.

If you would be interested in participating, please RSVP to Jonathan Ahlbrand (ahlbrandj@hotmail.com) by the end of next week (Feb 15th) so that he can submit your name to the organizers to ensure that we have you are on the access list. Thank you for your time and consideration. We look forward to your reply and hope to see you at QWS 2008.

Don't Forget to Pay Your Dues

The winter property tax bill comes due soon and Treasurer Dave is looking forward to having everyone's payment for their 2008 dues and fees.

Statements were sent out several weeks ago by email. If you did not receive your statement, please contact Commodore Pat Dolan by email at commodore@lansingsailing.org or by phone at 517-214-6568.

The deadline is February 11th - but see the article about "Dues Amnesty Night at Spags" for a fun alternative.

Wednesday, Feb 13 Dues Amnesty Night at Spags

Although the deadline for paying dues is February 11th this year, those who put this off can still meet the deadline by going to Spagnoula's for "Dues Amnesty Night" on Wednesday, February 13th from 7 PM to 9 PM.

Even if you have paid your dues, come to Spags and spend some time with your sailing friends.

You will also be able to sign up for Race Committee Duty. What a deal.
