Doug Crawford - Junior Racer of 2007

Mike Moody - Corinthian Award Winner

The 2007 Awards Banquet, with Olav Messerschmidt as MC, was another success.

While everyone knows who the award winners will be for the various fleet standings, many of the other awards were surprises. Julie Pierce and Dennis Dudley for example, were recognized as "Rules Gurus" for having the highest percentage of correct answers in Wednesday Rules Quizes at Spags after Sunfish and Laser Racing. Thirty people participated in the Rules Quizes on one or more Wednesdays. All together, the group score was 52% correct. A few never got a correct answer. However, Dennis got 6 of 8 (75%) correct and Julie got 5 of 7 (71%) correct.

The Ron Wilson Award, LSC most prestigious award, went to Maribeth and Jim Fletcher. This recognizes the dedication, enthusiasm for sailing and active participation exhibited by the Fletchers. Unfortunately the Fletchers weren't able to be at the event due to a conflict, but we will find an appropriate time to make a formal presentation.

The Awards Banquet Committee of Doug Carlson, Rhonda Bueche and Chairperson Olav Messerschmidt kept the night interesting and lively with some great trivia games. Each table found some interesting information about those at the table during dinner, then tried to trip up the other tables with a "Who Am I?" tale. A "Sit Down If" game finally found a winner when Shelagh Miller was the only person of those remaining standing who didn't eat chocolate as part of the after dinner dessert. Another "Sit Down If" game ended up recognizing two LSC couples about to be married. Stephen Wagner and Susanna Tellschow tie the knot next Saturday while Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins have an April date.

Mike Moody was given the Corinthian Award. Mike wasn't able to qualify for a racing award due to hip replacement surgery, but he helped out with Race Committee and did some crewing - hardly ever missing a race day.

John Kolstoe was named Rookie Crew of the year. Bob Miller and Gil Chesbro were named Crew of the Year. Scott Watkins received the Jane Marshall Wet Bottom Award.

Thomas Jost was recognized as Junior Sunfish Sailor while Doug Crawford was named Junior Racer of 2007.

Sunfish Fleet Captain Alanna Harvey handed out awards to seven sailors who qualified, including first place finisher John Fishbeck. For the Laser fleet, Doug Carlson recognized the nine Laser sailors who qualified for awards. Doug himself finished first.

For the Lightning Fleet, Captain Blaine Severin gave out awards to five skippers and their crews, including the first place trophy to Pat Dolan who won for the fifth consecutive year.

The best crowd in recent years was enthusiastic and enjoyed the evening. More pictures and story on the home page of the LSC website at www.lansingsailing.org.

Invitation to Video Screening at Dolan's November 28

Championship sailor Greg Fisher demonstrates in video

LSC Members and Crew are invited to Pat Dolan's home on Wednesday, November 28th at 7 pm to view "Better Boat Handling - the Next Step to Higher Finishes". This one-hour video includes light, medium and heavy air boat handling lessons shot on the water over two days of filming in Annapolis. It is narrated, in detail, in a question-and-answer format by North American Champions Greg Fisher and Rick Bernstein. In addition, Greg Fisher and crew were microphoned during the filming, so you’ll hear real race simulated lessons and gather important insight into championship caliber crew/skipper communication. This video features extraordinary video scenes shot by Rick, an award winning video producer.

Dolan's are at 1340 Hickory Island Drive, on Lake Lansing. From Marsh Road, go east on Lake Drive .7 miles to Hickory Island Drive. Turn left on Hickory Island Drive. Dolan's is the third home on the right.

By-Law Changes Open New Membership Options

At last Friday's Annual Meeting, held in conjunction with the Awards Banquet, members adopted four by-law amendments.

Dues Payment System. One change permits, but does not require, a dues payment system. The goal is to enable members to spread the cost of their membership over a period of months (probably December thru May) through transfers that would automatically be made from their personal account to the LSC account. This change would also enable a fee to be added to the payments to assure the total amount collected would be at least equal to the amount received had the member paid in one payment by the current February 10 deadline.

Reduced Dues for 18-25 year olds. A second By-Law change permits a reduced dues amount for regular members whose age is at least 18 but not greater than 25. No current Regular Member would be affected.

Kayak/Canoe Associate Membership. The third change permits a Kayak/Canoe Associate Membership. During 2007, a Kayak/Canoe program was adopted on a trial basis and resulted in the addition of several members including a member that became an active sailor.

Winter Associate Membership. The fourth change permits a Winter Associate Membership on a trial basis. The Winter Membership would permit keeping a boat on the property during the winter months only and is expected to have appeal primarily for ice-boaters or lake property owners wishing to have a place to keep their boat during the off-season.

The Board of Directors will begin soon to define details for implementing these changes.

No Increase in Dues or Fees for 2008

Members adopted the Budget recommended by the Board of Direcdtors for 2008 at last Friday's Annual Meeting. Other than continuing the normal operational expenditures, the only major item in the budget is to make the final payment on purchase of our new main dock. Dues and Fees will remain the same in 2008 as they were in 2007.

Landscape Volunteers Wanted

Members with a green thumb and some knowledge or interest in landscaping are asked to contact Commodore Pat Dolan.

"There is a lot we can do to make our Club a nicer place, and to be better neighbors," said Dolan.

We want to spend some time over the winter getting plans together so we will be ready to go in the spring.

Contact Dolan by email at patrick@dolan.name if you are interested in joining this effort.
