Awards Banquet Springs Surprises |

The 2007 Awards Banquet, with Olav Messerschmidt as MC, was another success. While everyone knows who the award winners will be for the various fleet standings, many of the other awards were surprises. Julie Pierce and Dennis Dudley for example, were recognized as "Rules Gurus" for having the highest percentage of correct answers in Wednesday Rules Quizes at Spags after Sunfish and Laser Racing. Thirty people participated in the Rules Quizes on one or more Wednesdays. All together, the group score was 52% correct. A few never got a correct answer. However, Dennis got 6 of 8 (75%) correct and Julie got 5 of 7 (71%) correct. The Ron Wilson Award, LSC most prestigious award, went to Maribeth and Jim Fletcher. This recognizes the dedication, enthusiasm for sailing and active participation exhibited by the Fletchers. Unfortunately the Fletchers weren't able to be at the event due to a conflict, but we will find an appropriate time to make a formal presentation. The Awards Banquet Committee of Doug Carlson, Rhonda Bueche and Chairperson Olav Messerschmidt kept the night interesting and lively with some great trivia games. Each table found some interesting information about those at the table during dinner, then tried to trip up the other tables with a "Who Am I?" tale. A "Sit Down If" game finally found a winner when Shelagh Miller was the only person of those remaining standing who didn't eat chocolate as part of the after dinner dessert. Another "Sit Down If" game ended up recognizing two LSC couples about to be married. Stephen Wagner and Susanna Tellschow tie the knot next Saturday while Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins have an April date. Mike Moody was given the Corinthian Award. Mike wasn't able to qualify for a racing award due to hip replacement surgery, but he helped out with Race Committee and did some crewing - hardly ever missing a race day. John Kolstoe was named Rookie Crew of the year. Bob Miller and Gil Chesbro were named Crew of the Year. Scott Watkins received the Jane Marshall Wet Bottom Award. Thomas Jost was recognized as Junior Sunfish Sailor while Doug Crawford was named Junior Racer of 2007. Sunfish Fleet Captain Alanna Harvey handed out awards to seven sailors who qualified, including first place finisher John Fishbeck. For the Laser fleet, Doug Carlson recognized the nine Laser sailors who qualified for awards. Doug himself finished first. For the Lightning Fleet, Captain Blaine Severin gave out awards to five skippers and their crews, including the first place trophy to Pat Dolan who won for the fifth consecutive year. The best crowd in recent years was enthusiastic and enjoyed the evening. More pictures and story on the home page of the LSC website at www.lansingsailing.org. |
