Docks Are Out

Sign Up for Annual Banquet

Cedarfest Pictures by Stephen Wagner - Link on LSC website

Requests for 2008 Race Committee Sign-up will begin after the first of the year.

What is in those cups guys?

The docks came out Saturday as Lansing Sailing Club members took advantage of a beautiful October day. Not only that, but Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher's leadership got a lot of other things done as well.

With the Committee Boat and Safety Boat already at Wilson Marine for winterizing, the Club Boat group was able to focus on the Club sailboats. They are being put away cleaner this year - and with repairs already made.

The grounds crew did a great job of not only gathering leaves, but of cleaning up overgrown brush and cement pieces. Not only that, but an old gate anchor was dug up and will no longer be the cause of stumbles or of nicks in the mower blade.

On the dock front, the crew tested a new "dock dolly" created for us by Schneider Fabrication as part of the new Main Dock. The dolly slides under the dock section while in the water, then a winch invokes a scissors action within the dolly to raise the dock so that it can be easily wheeled away. The dolly works as well on the old dock as on the new dock - a big bonus for members whose backs were suffering more and more each year from having to lift and carry the heavy old dock sections.

As is always the case, there are a few more things to do before the Club can be buttoned up for winter - so members that couldn't make it to docks-out Saturday should contact Jim Fletcher to help with some of the remaining items.

Leif Alton Takes on Roofing Job

Leif preps the roof for new shingles

Leif Alton volunteered to remove the old shingles and put new ones on the Equipment Shed - and took this task on last Friday. When members arrived for Docks-Out, the shed sported its new roof. Many thanks to Leif for taking this on.

Wayne Loescher and Jim Fletcher began this project several weeks ago, removing old and decaying sides and making repairs to some of the framing. They also installed new doors.

Now, a little more trim work and a coat of paint will give us an equipment shed that will serve us for many more years.

Tasks That Need Attention at LSC

Fulfill a Duty Obligation

Here are some tasks that need attention at the Lansing Sailing Club.

Completing a task fulfills a Deck Duty obligation. In addition to Docks In, Docks Out and serving on a Race Committee, each member has one Deck Duty obligation every year (such as helping organize a Holiday Picnic). Members who have not met their Deck Duty obligation can do so by selecting something from this list.

After completing a task, leave a note for Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher or Commodore Pat Dolan to receive credit. If funds are expended to complete the task, leave a receipt with your name on it in the Treasurer's box for reimbursement.

Questions? Contact Jim Fletcher or Pat Dolan.

Paint Equipment Shed. After the trim work goes on the Equipment Shed, it will be ready for a paint job.

Install Screen Under Equipment Shed Eaves . Screening needs to be installed in the gap between the roof and siding on the Equipment Shed to keep out critters.

Add Shelves on Kitchen Door for Computer Equipment. Add a shelf arrangement on the west side Kitchen door that will support the use of a laptop computer. Also add a shelf for a printer. The shelves need to be designed and constructed so that the door will close smoothly with the computer and printer in place. They also need to be designed and constructed so that the printer and computer will not fall off when the door is opened or closed.

Reinforce Spar/Sail Supports in Small Sail Shed. Reinforce where possible, otherwise replace the spar/sail supports in the Small Sailshed that are loose so that sails and spars have solid resting places.
