Kolstoe Boat First To Use Dock

The new Lansing Sailing Club main dock was installed Saturday by manufacturer Schneider Fabricating of St. Johns. It offers a number of advantages over the old dock, including a long life span with minimum maintenance, easy handling for docks-in and docks-out, an adjustable anchoring system and more.

Doug Carlson headed up LSC's Dock Project and noted that the old dock sections were requiring replacement at a rapid rate because the treated lumber originally used is no longer available and today's version of treated lumber has a much shorter life span. "This was causing the Club to replace three to four sections a year," said Carlson, "and led us several years ago to explore the acquisition of a new dock system that would not wear out."

Just like walking on our old floating dock required some getting used to each spring, the new dock will also take a while to get familiar with because the motion is slightly different. Whereas the old dock lacked side to side stability, the floation on the new dock helps in this direction - but there is some longitudinal movement to get used to. If this proves over time to neet attention, more floation can easily be added. However, the initial reaction of those at the Club on Saturday was very positive.

To tie off boats, a line with a loop is tied around the edge of the dock approximately every ten feet. "We have an idea for a more permanent solution to creating a tie-off system," said Carlson, but we want more time to evaluate this idea - and the temporary system is similar to what we are thinking about long term. We are anxious to hear from sailors how the system works for them."

For docks-in and docks-out, Schneider Fabricating is preparing a "dolly" for us that will slide under the middle of the section and permit one or two people to easily move dock sections to and from storage spots on the property. We are also hoping that this dolly will work on the old sections so that moving them will no longer require a large crew - however, we will need to wait to see if this proves to be the case.

Come out and check out the new dock. There will still be some great sailing days in the two weeks before docks out.

Hurlbutt Pulls Ahead in Battle for Second - Moody Back at the Helm

"Shibumi" heading upwind Sunday

Sunday afternoon at the Club

Three third place finishes for the "Bo Jangles II" team of Merrick Hurlbutt, Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins gave Hurlbutt a little more cushion in his battle for second with Susanna Tellschow. Tellschow struggled with a broken hiking stick to a sixth and two fourths. She remains in striking distance however and both will be sailing in next week's finale. Eight boats were on the water today, putting a lot of points in play. With a good turnout next week, the lead of Hurlbutt is not insurmountable. Stay tuned.

On "Shibumi" Sunday, newcomer and Wisconsin transplant Chris Simonds sailed with master sailor Larry Koster for the second time. "Last week was Chris' first time for doing spinnaker work," said Koster, "and he picked it up quickly. Chris is a quick learner and did a great job today with the spinnaker sheet and guy." Also aboard with Koster Sunday was Tom Rasmussen. Larry notes that Chris is a graduate of Marquette University at Milwaukee and is in his 2nd year at Cooley Law School. He will be in the Lansing area for another 2 years and Larry hopes to encourage Chris to join in our Wednesday racing next summer.

It was good to see Mike Moody back at the helm of "Moody's Booty". After two hip replacements and six weeks of recovery, Mike has regained the agility needed to be comfortable in the driver's seat. With Doug Carlson in the middle and Emma Trentman in the front position, Mike showed he hasn't lost much of his touch with three second place finishes - including an exciting first race conclusion where he edged out two other skippers. In all three races, he pressed the leader and was never more than a few boatlengths behind.

"Wind Dancer", with eleven first place finishes in their last twelve races, has their fifth consecutive season championship well in hand.

Equipment Shed Repair Starts - Electrical Gurus Brook and Strangas Star

Studs exposed

New siding and doors on this side

Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher and Facilities Director Wayne Loescher launched the repair of LSC's Equipment Shed Saturday.

Then, on Sunday, Bob Brook and Elias Strangas went to work on solving some of the electrical problems in the Kitchen area. They replaced a broken GFI outlet, added a GFI outlet next to the refrig, provided enough outlets for everything in the Kitchen and replaced the broken timer switch in the women's changing room. Superstars. Thanks guys.

Members have surely noticed that the doors, siding, trim and roof are either rotting away or in bad shape. Further delay in attending to this problem would put the entire structure in jeopardy.

There is much yet to do, and volunteers are hoped for. Jim and Wayne will be back at the project next Sunday morning at 9 am. Members able to assist will be appreciated.

Also, it is hoped that several members will take on the task of removing the shingles sometime during the next two weeks so that they can be replaced. Contact either Jim Fletcher or Wayne Loescher for details and coordination.

Tasks That Need Attention at LSC

Fulfill a Duty Obligation

Here are some tasks that need attention at the Lansing Sailing Club.

Completing a task fulfills a Deck Duty obligation. In addition to Docks In, Docks Out and serving on a Race Committee, each member has one Deck Duty obligation every year (such as helping organize a Holiday Picnic). Members who have not met their Deck Duty obligation can do so by selecting something from this list.

After completing a task, leave a note for Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher or Commodore Pat Dolan to receive credit. If funds are expended to complete the task, leave a receipt with your name on it in the Treasurer's box for reimbursement.

Questions? Contact Jim Fletcher or Pat Dolan.

Remove Shingles From Roof of Equipment Shed. As part of repair of the Equipment Shed, we want to replace the shingles. Before this can be done, the old shingles need to be removed. Due to the amount of moss and other growth on the roof as well as other considerations, we don't want to put new shingles over the old ones.

Spread Wood Chips on South Berm. With weed growth cut down, we want to put a layer of wood chips on the South Berm as soon as possible. Contact Pat Dolan for more details.

Add Shelves on Kitchen Door for Computer Equipment. Add a shelf arrangement on the west side Kitchen door that will support the use of a laptop computer. Also add a shelf for a printer. The shelves need to be designed and constructed so that the door will close smoothly with the computer and printer in place. They also need to be designed and constructed so that the printer and computer will not fall off when the door is opened or closed.

Install Additional Side Controls on "Oh_m". Install a fourth cam cleat in the side control areas of "Oh m" so that the traveler up-down control lines can be led to these points. See "Wind Dancer" or other Lightnings with such a controlfor an example of how this works. Contact Pat Dolan for the cam cleats.

Cut off Bolt Ends on "Oh m" Side Controls. The ends of bolts that hold the side control panel in place on "Oh m" need to be sawed off, then filed so the ends are smooth. There are four of these bolts on each side.

Reinforce Spar/Sail Supports in Small Sail Shed. Reinforce where possible, otherwise replace the spar/sail supports in the Small Sailshed that are loose so that sails and spars have solid resting places.

Plant Spring Bulbs. (Sandy Bryson has volunteered for this) Plant spring bulbs next to the clubhouse on the north side where the Day Lillies are so that there will be early spring color here. Also, plant spring bulbs on the road side of the fence near the entry so that this area will be attractive in the spring.

Recent Tasks Completed - Thanks
