Almost Drifting Finish - Five Boats in 15 seconds

Lining up for the start

Sunday's Lightning fleet racing attracted six boats and a couple of new faces in the crews.

"Wind Dancer", sailed by Pat Dolan, Lissy Goralnik and Gil Chesbro, took two races while "Bananas" took race three. Jonathan Ahlbrand and Bob Bell were on "Bananas".

Emma Trentman, Ryan Peterson and Mike Aranoff were new faces among the crews. Emma is new to the Lansing area, doing graduate work at Michigan State and was formerly a member of the Georgetown Sailing Team where she did a lot of crewing in Flying Juniors and 420s. Ryan is a transplant from Wisconsin. He spent time at the UW Sailing Center last summer learning to sail Lasers and other dinghys.

Mike Aranoff became a Lansing Sailing Club member earlier this summer, and has been working with Paul Davis to learn Sunfish Sailing. Mike was at the Club to help out with Race Committee and got drafted to sail with Mike Moody.

Moody was back in the skipper's seat for the first time in quite a while. After two hip replacements, each followed by about six weeks of recovery, Mike is back at the tiller. "Moody's Booty" was constantly in contention, but ended up 6-5-6 for the day.

Merrick Hurlbutt and "Bo Jangles II" crew Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins sailed very well and had two seconds and a fourth to show for their efforts. Susanna Tellschow started slow with a new crew member on board and sailing "Oh m" with a new side control configuration. However, with Stephen Wagner and Ryan Peterson gaining experience and understanding of the boat, they ended up with a second and a third in the last two races.

Jonathan Ahlbrand and Bob Bell added a fourth and third to go with their last race bullet. In "Unidentified Flying Pigasus", Blaine Severin, Julie Pierce and Alanna Harvey had a 3-6-5 day and were constantly pushing the lead boats.

Paul Davis and Tom Rasmussen helped out with Race Committee Duty and the pictures of this race day are courtesy of Paul's camera.

New Clubhouse Must Wait

LSC Pavillion

After a year of study, the Board of Directors has determined that the current number of members needs to be increased before a new Clubhouse can be pursued. Even with most of the work being done by member volunteers, a dues increase of at least $350 would be necessary to meet mortgage payment obligations, pay increased property taxes and other costs. This is viewed by the Board as a risky proposition at this time.

With an increased membership, this project can be revisited. In the meantime, there are a number of minor improvements that can be made in the Pavillion that will make our Club better. Commodore Pat Dolan will be identifying these improvements and seeking assistance from members to get them done. Watch the "Tasks That Need Attention at LSC" section.

New Dock to be Installed - Main Dock to be Unavailable Thursday and Friday

This Saturday a new main dock will be installed by Schneider Fabricating. The new dock will offer many improvements over the existing dock - including long lasting aluminum framing and vinyl non-skid decking.

The new dock will also be a floating dock, but the floats and method of connecting dock sections will provide a much more stable platform than we now have.

A work party of LSC volunteers and MSU Sailing Team members will remove the existing dock Wednesday evening. Next spring, the existing dock will replace the north dock. North dock sections utilize old hardware and are showing their age, so we will be utilizing them for other purposes such as walkways over wet areas.

Doug Carlson has led the effort to bring this project to fruition.

Wednesday is "Talk Like a Pirate" Day

Tasks That Need Attention at LSC

Fulfill a Duty Obligation

Here are some tasks that need attention at the Lansing Sailing Club.

Completing a task fulfills a Deck Duty obligation. In addition to Docks In, Docks Out and serving on a Race Committee, each member has one Deck Duty obligation every year (such as helping organize a Holiday Picnic). Members who have not met their Deck Duty obligation can do so by selecting something from this list.

After completing a task, leave a note for Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher or Commodore Pat Dolan to receive credit. If funds are expended to complete the task, leave a receipt with your name on it in the Treasurer's box for reimbursement.

Questions? Contact Jim Fletcher or Pat Dolan.

Plant Spring Bulbs . Plant spring bulbs next to the clubhouse on the north side where the Day Lillies are so that there will be early spring color here. Also, plant spring bulbs on the road side of the fence near the entry so that this area will be attractive in the spring. Contact Pat Dolan for bulbs and further instructions.

Add Shelves on Kitchen Door for Computer Equipment. Add a shelf arrangement on the west side Kitchen door that will support the use of a laptop computer. Also add a shelf for a printer. The shelves need to be designed and constructed so that the door will close smoothly with the computer and printer in place. They also need to be designed and constructed so that the printer and computer will not fall off when the door is opened or closed.

Install Additional Side Controls on "Oh_m" . Install a fourth cam cleat and fairlead in the side control area of "Oh m" so that the traveler up-down control lines can be led to these points. See "Wind Dancer" s for an example of how this control works. Contact Pat Dolan for the cam cleats and fairleads.

Cut off Bolt Ends on "Oh m" Side Controls . The ends of bolts that hold the side control panel in place on "Oh m" need to be sawed off, then filed so the ends are smooth. There are four of these bolts on each side.

Add Electrical Outlet In Kitchen. Add another electrical outlet in the Kitchen area of the Clubhouse near the one used by the refrigerator. When installed, add a six outlet plug-in like the one in the existing outlet, then plug the refrigerator, water cooler, coffee maker and microwave into the new outlets - removing the extension cord currently in use.

Reinforce Spar/Sail Supports in Small Sail Shed. Reinforce where possible, otherwise replace the spar/sail supports in the Small Sailshed that are loose so that sails and spars have solid resting places.
