"Wind Dancer" Wins Two but Tellschow Sails Best Race of the Day |
|
|||||
Susanna Tellschow and Julie Pierce made a key tack early in race one to put themselves in first position, then came up with excellent tactical measures to win by a boat length. Tellschow had built a ten boat-length lead going around the leeward mark, but "Wind Dancer" managed to split and find a wind shift to just miss catching the leaders. However, when the boats came together, Tellschow got in phase and stayed there to extend her lead when "Wind Dancer" again split to gain leverage. On the downwind, there were early opportunities for "Wind Dancer", but Tellschow and Pierce gybed away on a lift at a point where "Wind Dancer" sailed into a slight lull. Dolan, Miller and Chesbro tried to make lemonade out of lemons by splitting for leverage and came to the finish with good speed - but settled for second a few yards behind. In the second race, Jonathan Ahlbrand and Bob Bell quickly grabbed the lead. Then, as the other boats split, they sailed "Bananas" to the right corner and when they came in to the mark, "Wind Dancer" was there to lee bow them and take over first place. "Bananas" managed to find problems spots on the lake. They ran into a shallow area where the silt slows you down, but doesn't give the usual audio clues that the board is in the muck. Then, they found a spot where the wind died and enabled Tellschow to sail by on the downwind to the finish. In race three, "Wind Dancer" took command early, got in phase, and kept extending during the five leg course. Ahlbrand was second and Tellschow third. Thanks to Mike Moody for serving as Race Committee with the usual RC head, Anna Hamilton, out of town.
