The job of Race Committee can be tough

Check the picture of Race Committee Captain Anna Hamilton at right. Her look tells the story of trying to set a course in big wind shifts and lots of dead air in between.

Anna finally rolled the dice and got the sequence started. The sailors appreciate how difficult it is - but everyone is sailing on the same pond and has to overcome the same obstacles.

"Wind Dancer" timed the start well and had ideal position with as much speed as the wind enabled. Meanwhile, the other three boats were bunched about a third of the way down the line, and at least one had just tacked. They struggled to get moving.

For the first three legs, the wind was mostly from the east - although very light. Then it began to come from the west. Crews moved across the boat and tacked without changing direction. Shortly, the back of sailors on the leeward side got cold and there was another tack without changing direction. This happend one last time as a new wind system settled in and the boats completed race one.

The Committee moved the course and ran Race 2 in a pleasant 6-8 mph wind that managed to stay a windward leeward course from beginning to end.

"Wind Dancer" got the win in both races - but, in contrast to her Race 1 start, had to come from third place to win the second race when a tack too close to the gun let the other boats roll by. The main difference was "Bananas" choice not to fly a spinnaker on the first downwind of Race 2. Pat Dolan, Bob Miller and Gil Chesbro on "Wind Dancer" had way too much speed downhill with her kite full.

Jonathan Ahlbrand, "Bananas" skipper and John Kolstoe brought home two second place finishes. Larry Koster, Gary Marx and Michael-Salomon Jost on "Shibumi" were third in the second race while "Bo Jangles II" sailed by Merrick Hurlbutt, Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins were third in Race 1.

Rescheduled Laser Regatta Coming August 25th

Chad Coberly Sails to a win in the 2006 Regatta

The Lake Lansing Laser Fleet sponsors its annual Laser Regatta in two short weeks. Rescheduled from earlier this summer when a lack of wind kept sailors from even going on the water, the Regatta will take place Saturday, August 25th.

Registration will open at 8 am, a Skipper's Meeting is scheduled for 9:30 and the first of six scheduled races is planned for 10 am.

Cost is $30 with a five dollar break to sailors belonging to US Sailing or the Laser Association. The entry fee covers lunch, a chicken/steak BBQ, awards and lots of friendly sailors with a healthy competitive spirit.

For more information, there is a link to the Regatta Announcement on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org.

New LSC Directory On Line

The Lansing Sailing Club Member Directory has been updated with recent additions to the roster as well as several changes in email addresses or other information.

A copy of the Directory is in a folder at the Clubhouse - and members can also download and print their own copy from the LSC website at www.lansingsailing.org. Go to the Members Only area and click on "Member Directory". The user name for login purposes is "lsc" and the password is the gate combination. If anyone has difficulty logging in or printing the directory, please contact Commodore Pat Dolan by email at commodore@lansingsailing.org or by phone at 517-214-6568.

Tasks That Need Attention at LSC

Fulfill a Duty Obligation

Here are some tasks that need attention at the Lansing Sailing Club.

Completing a task fulfills a Deck Duty obligation. In addition to Docks In, Docks Out and serving on a Race Committee, each member has one Deck Duty obligation every year (such as helping organize a Holiday Picnic). Members who have not met their Deck Duty obligation can do so by selecting something from this list.

After completing a task, leave a note for Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher or Commodore Pat Dolan to receive credit. If funds are expended to complete the task, leave a receipt with your name on it in the Treasurer's box for reimbursement.

Questions? Contact Jim Fletcher or Pat Dolan.

Spoken for by Sandy Bryson

Weed Flower Bed Next to Clubhouse. Remove grass and weeds from the flower bed on the North side of the Clubhouse to make it easier for the Stella d'Oro Daylillies to grow.

Add Electrical Outlet In Kitchen. Add another electrical outlet in the Kitchen area of the Clubhouse near the one used by the refrigerator. When installed, add a six outlet plug-in like the one in the existing outlet, then plug the refrigerator, water cooler, coffee maker and microwave into the new outlets - removing the extension cord currently in use.

Remove Weeds from 20' of South Berm. Remove the weeds from 20' of the South Berm (both sides) in preparation for wood chips to be put down. Be careful not to remove evergreens, bushes or ground cover (Bishop's Weed?) planted there. This is a long berm, so there are multiple 20' sections that need attention.

Reinforce Spar/Sail Supports in Small Sail Shed. Reinforce where possible, otherwise replace the spar/sail supports in the Small Sailshed that are loose so that sails and spars have solid resting places.

Repair Siding on Sail Shed. The siding on one of the Sail Sheds is coming loose at the base. This needs to be reattached.

Replace Gate Padlock Chain.
