Sailors Frolic in Light Air Wednesday |
|
|||||
It was hot throughout the Lansing area, but on the water Wednesday sailors found just enough breeze across cooler water to enjoy some natural air conditioning. Seven Sunfish and nine Lasers participated. In addition to some racing, sailors also found time to splash each other. In one case, while Olav Messerschmidt was distracted in a splashing war with Pat Dolan, Doug Carlson used stelth to sail up to Olav's boat and suddenly lift his bow - surprising Olav and almost dumping him overboard. Meanwhile, there was enough wind to get two races in using the traditional Olympic Course. The Sunfish skippers were most consistent, each finishing both races in the same order. Jim Fletcher was first, Dave Vietti second, Dennis Dudley third and Alanna Harvey fourth. Larry Koster made an appearance on a Club Sunfish. Laser sailors were almost as consistent. Doug Carlson turned in two first place finishes. Susanna Tellschow took second in the first race, then picked up a fourth in race two. Olav Messerschmidt was third then second before the sailors headed for the beach and then on to Spagnoula's. Pat Dolan finished fourth in race one, then found his way to third in the final race of the day. Dave MacKenzie was able to sail for the first time this year and Aaron Picot's friend Mike joined the Laser sailors. At Spagnoula's, the Quizmaster found sailors back on track, with 80% getting the correct result. The season record shows gradual improvement during the season. Sailors were stumped with the first quiz back in May, with only 13 percent getting the right answer. Now however, the season average has built to 45 percent. A total of 26 have participated in the Quizes at some point during the season. Detailed results and season standings are available on the Lansing Sailing Club website at www.lansingsailing.org.
