Stephen Wagner recaps an event from one of the races

LSC's Orchard Lake Cup Team came home Saturday evening with a lot of great memories - including getting their picture taken as winners of the 2007 Cup.

Eleven Lansing Sailing Club members sailed three Lasers and three "Y" Boats (a two or three person boat about the size of a Lightning). LSC took the top two Laser spots in overall results and our score was the best team score for Laser sailing.

With a solid showing in "Y" Boats added in, the overall Cup winning score of 103, was comfortably ahead of the 112 scored by the Team coming in second.

More detail and lots of pictures are on the LSC website at www.lansingsailing.org. Go there and read about Susanna Tellschow's four bullets in five races, Doug Crawford's breakout day - and lot's more.

Moonlight Sail in Beautiful Weather

Paul and Bonie Davis brought their neighbors. Loescher's brought their canoe

Friday's Moonlight Sail was one of the best ever. There was dinner cooked on the grill for some - and the desserts were mmmmmmm good.

When the twenty or so that turned out went on the water, they found the moon just rising over the trees, warm termps and a gentle breeze that kept the boats moving well and mosquitos away.

If you missed out - just imagine a fabulous time for those who participated.

Covered Rack Has New Home

Covered Rack in New Home

Although there was no racing last Sunday due to lack of wind, a group of the sailors dedicated some time to a task requested by the Rear Commodore: move the covered rack from the waterfront to a less conspicuous spot near the sail sheds.

The covered rack is part of a project to find a solution to the need for above ground storage for Sunfish and Lasers while enabling Junior Sailors without adult strength to be able to get the boat out of storage and launched.

Gil Chesbro's design accomplishes these objectives very well, and he had the foresight to design the base of the structure to be like a sled - and capable of easily being moved. After detaching it from its anchors (augers set into the ground and bolted to the rack), the race was pulled by car into the general area for its new home - then pushed and pulled into its final location.

Thanks to all who stayed to help with this project.

Hurlbutt Sails to a Win and Two Seconds. Wind Dancer Wins Two

"Bo Jangles II" heads to windward as "Wind Dancer" takes her chute down in preparation for the mark rounding.

The "Shibumi" crew heads back to windward in lee of "Wind Dancer"

Susanna Tellschow claims inside rights on "Sail Fevre" at leeward mark.

Merrick Hurlbutt, Adrianne Tuttle and Scott Watkins found a way to split with "Wind Dancer" part way up the second windward leg of Race Two, found a favorable shift and crossed ahead into a lead they never relinquished. Result: a win in Lightning Fleet Racing Sunday afternoon. Sporting their new "Bo Jangles II" graphics, the team was inspired to come from several hundred yards back in the final race of the day to nip "Sail Fevre" for second place. This matched their result in Race One, but was much more dramatic.

"Wind Dancer" was a hot boat for the day, getting off to early leads in all races and extending in all but race two to finish substantially ahead. Maureen Soergel, sailing only her second race day - and first since mid-May, kept improving her technique with tacking and handling the pole. Of course, just when she thought she had something understood, Dolan called for a gybe set or something else new.

Three different crews took control of third place in each race. Larry Koster, Michael-Salomon Jost and Gary Marx took that spot in the first race, nipping Susanna Tellschow by inches at the finish. Susanna returned the favor in the next race, finishing just ahead of Koster. Mike Moody and Julie Pierce sailed with Susanna aboard a borrowed boat, "Unidentified Flying Pigasus".

In the final race of the day it was John LeFevre that worked wind shifts well early in the race to stay close to "Wind Dancer". Only when an unfavorable wind shift found "Sail Fevre" headed coming to the finish while "Bo Jangles II" was lifted did they settle for third.

Detailed Results and Season Standings will be available soon on the LSC website at www.lansingsailing.org. Click on "Racing" from the home page navagation menu, then on the Lightning Logo.
