Christian recovering from a capsize

Some of our Junior Sailors put last week's work on capsize recovery to good use Tuesday. With a wind in the 10 to 12 range, there was enough for several sailors to capsize. It was then that we saw how great a job they did last week in learning how to recover. All were quickly up and sailing again.

Coach Dolan had a plan for the evening that quickly dissolved as wind conditions that were new for many created unexpected results. There were lots of sailors experiencing "being in irons" - particularly when trying to sail upwind, and it took a while to get everyone sailing.

Before the evening was over however, the plan was back and sailors did a "Stop and Go" exercise and a "Tack on the Whistle" drill before heading back to the launch area and putting away the boats.

Junior Sailors get a week off next week as there is no session on July 3. They meet again on Tuesday, July 10 when work on upwind sailing will continue along with other skill development.

Lasers and Sunfish Sail Next Thursday

How we "sailed" Wednesday

Note: Sunfish and Laser sailors will not be racing on the Fourth of July. Instead, racing will be held on Thursday, July 5th next week.

Sunfish and Laser sailors were shut out again Wednesday. This time it wasn't a lack of wind. Rather it was severe weather that threatened.

Sailors checked the radar and weather reports - hoping to see an opportunity to go on the water. However, the LSC weather guru said "I wouldn't fly, and I wouldn't Sunfish in this situation".

With this advice, it was easy to adjourn early in favor of Spagnoulas. Quizmaster Doug got the group again, with only 30 percent of the sailors getting the correct answer to this week's Race Rules Quiz.

Cheboygan to Harbor Beach on Sacre Bleu

Dennis at Sacre Bleu Helm

Editor's Note: Dennis Dudley is bringing his newly acquired Ericson 35, "Sacre Bleu", to Port Huron from Waukeegan, IL. This report from Dennis comes after the leg of this journey that took him to Harbor Springs.

I "sailed" with Ken Zielinski from Cheybogan to Harbor Beach in one week end. We motored the whole way. Love that diesel engine! Ken and I left Cheybogan about 6 pm. The original goal was Rogers City. The winds were light with no waves. My wife had expressed a desire to get the voyage finished, so she didn't want to have to continue to spend her week ends picking up grubby sailors.

As we approached Rogers City we decided to just keep going through out the night. Ken brought his winter Navy style Pea Coat this time. It kept him warm, the Navy designed that coat right. We had a down sleeping bag that is good to zero. So one slept in the cock pit while the other steered. We stayed well off shore to avoid islands in the Thunder Bay area. Saw two frieghters anchored off shore waiting to pick up a load of limestone off Stone Port (clever name). That was the only sign of life besides ourselves.

When the sun came up we were off Harrisville but only 60 miles from Port Austin across the mouth of Saginaw Bay. We decided to head for there, the tip of the thumb. The weather stayed calm with no waves --- ideal for motoring. Arrived in Port Austin about 4:30 pm after 23 hours on the water. The 22 1/2 gal. fuel tank took 17 gal. Spent the night at the state docks there. They were the cleanest of all the docks that we had visited. They even had a cob web crew out in the morning.

Left at 7 am for Harbor Beach. Again there was no wind, the water suface had an oily look. The weather was warm. Later as we approached Harbor Beach things cooled down and fog closed in. My trusty GPS guided us right to the harbor entrance.

Distance from Cheybogan to Port Austin 132 mi.
Distance to Harbor Beach 32 mi.
Total 166 mi. at about 7 mph.

Moonlight Sail This Friday at 8

This coming Friday (June 29), is the Friday nearest the full moon and sets the scene for LSC's first Moonlight Sail of the summer.

Our tradition is to gather at 8 pm for desert and then go on the water about to enjoy the full moon. For Associate Members or Single Handed Sailors there are usually plenty of spots on Lightnings or other sailboats - and the LSC Pontoon and Safety Boats can also be utilized.

Bring a small dessert to share and the beverage of your choice. There are plates, napkins and plastic utensils at the Club.
