Sunday Sailors Get One In - Barely |
|
|||||
On Satruday, the Laser Regatta was cancelled due to lack fo wind. Light air conditions then continued into Sunday. Very few ripples were to be found all morning. About 12:30, a deeper blue began to fill Lake Lansing and the sailors ventured forth to race. A course was set, recognizing a breeze from the North, and the Race Committee got things underway around 1 pm. All was going well. Not a lot of wind, but enough to get the boats moving at a reasonable clip. Mike Moody came down the starting line on port (see picture), seeming inclined to duck the fleet and working the right hand side of the course. Susanna Tellschow came in on port and tacked to start at the Committee Boat end, but Dolan's "Wind Dancer" overtook from clear astern and forced her above the line. As Dolan headed left with Ahlbrand and Koster, Susanna ducked below the line, gybed and went right with Moody. It wasn't long before the wind died. With the fleet now spread across the lake, little zephers of wind would propel first one boat, then another into good postion. Moody was first to arrive in the vicintiy of the windward mark, but parked in a hole for quite a while - no doubt thinking it would only be sporting to give everyone a chance to catch up. When no one took advantage, Mike went on around the mark and down the second leg. Eventually, Ahlbrand then Tellschow, Dolan and Koster drifted from leg one to leg two. "Wind Dancer" now began to make its move, first passing Tellschow, then catching Ahlbrand at the end of the leg. As the boats rounded, the shorten course flag was flown and crews began efforts to catch Moody and crew Jim Fletcher before the finish. It was to no avail however, as wind filled in from Mike's end of the fleet and pushed him over the finish well ahead of everyone. Dolan, Miller and Chesbro in "Wnd Dancer" made a good charge at the leader, but could only follow in for second place when "Moody's Booty" got the new wind before them. Jonathan Ahlbrand, sailing with dad Ray and John Kolstoe were third. Susanna Tellschow, Julie Pierce and Aaron Picot were left defenseless when the last half of the final leg turned into a reach with boats ahead getting wind before her borrowed "Flying Pigasus". Michael-Salomon Jost, crewing with Larry Koster, were determined, but the wind never got to them after the start of leg three and they wisely headed for the dock as the wind took everyone else to the finish. By the end of this race, with very few ripples on the water and a growing amount of chop from jet skis and other traffic, the sailors decided to abandon hopes of getting any more racing in. There will be other Sundays. Results will soon be on the Lansing Sailing Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org.
