Visitors to Lake Lansing took three of the top five spots in Saturday's 42nd "Tune Up" Lightning Regatta. Chris Jacobson of Bay City won the event with 7 points on three bullets and two seconds. Jacobson teamed with Gus Dey and Tom Hernick.

George Nickels of the Fenton Sail Club and Pat Dolan of LSC tied for second with 11 points. However, the second place trophy went to Nickels, whose two first place finishes were one better than Dolan's. George sailed with son Brian and grandson Tim. Gil Chesbro and Terry Kleiman joined Pat Dolan on "Wind Dancer" for the Regatta and took home honors for the best performing Lansing Boat.

In fourth place was John Heagy, Secretary of the Lightning Michigan District, who sails out of North Cape. Heagy was joined on board by Nick Gilmore and Bruce Goldsmith. They had 21 points including a second.

The remaining hardware was taken home by LSC veteran Larry Koster and crew members Gary Marx and Michael-Salomon Jost. This "Shibumi" crew ended up with 23 points including a second in the final race where they were just nosed out at the finish by Nickels.

Other LSC crews competing were Jim Fletcher, Susanna Tellschow, Merrick Hurlbutt and John LeFevre. Only two points separated boats from sixth place on - attesting to the closeness of racing.

Memorial Day Picnic Next Monday - May 28 - at Noon

"Pointless" crew participates in on water fun last Memorial Day

Plan to attend next Monday's (May 28th) Memorial Day Picnic and afternoon of fun on land and on the Water. The picnic kicks off the day's activities at noon with other events to follow.

Bring a dish to pass. LSC provides brats, hot dogs, soft drinks, paper and plastic.

Be prepared to have fun as well as good food. Our "Event Directors" are finalizing some terrific ideas for activities.

In the past we have had bocce ball, volleyball, kite flying, balloon chases on the water, scavenger hunts that take us to all corners of the lake and other fun events. Come and see what the Events Directors have in mind for us this year.

Moody Wins Two - Tellschow Posts First Win in 2007

Mike Moody led the way in Lightning Fleet Racing Sunday with two first place finishes and a third. Sailing with Mike were Jason Grimes and Bryan Howser. In each race, Mike pushed his boat to the right side where he found a favorable right shift that took him into a lead in each race.

Susanna Tellschow won her first race of the season in the finale, coming from behind in the last leg on a left shift that propelled her past Moody who had led around the final mark, but pressed right. Stephen Wagner and Michael-Salomon Jost sailed with Susanna, borrowing "Unidentified Flying Pigasus" from Blaine Severin.

Pat Dolan turned in three second place finishes. His "Wind Dancer" crew of Maureen Soergel and Terry Kleiman were briefly in first place early in each race, but favored the left hand side of the course as the winners typically found a favorable right hander on the east shore of Lake Lansing.

Wind intensity was almost perfect - 8-12 mph. However, shifts of 30 degrees, including some of very short duration in micro bursts that gave no advance indication of ripples on the water, kept the sailors on their toes.

Junior Sailing Starts June 12

Cody Eggenberger ready to get aboard his Laser last year

The Junior Sailing Program at the Lansing Sailing Club this summer is on Tuesday evenings beginning June 12th. The first few sessions are mostly instructional, giving first time sailors some basic sailing skills and taking experienced sailors into some new territory.

This program is for 10 to 17 year old boys and girls. Sunfish Sailboats are mainly used in the program. Sunfish are very easy to rig and sail - and they are sailed throughout the world. There are moreSunfish than any other type of sailboat.

For more information, go to the Lansing Sailing Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org.
