An Optimist Sailboat on Lake Lansing

George Sielge is getting a group together to build Optimist Sailboats and DN-Optis. This is a great opportunity for a family to get their junior sailor a boat to sail on Lake Lansing. The Optimist, or "Opti" as it is popularly known, is used all over the world to teach kids how to sail.

George reminds us that a couple of years ago, several people got together to build DNs. George is now leading an effort to the same thing with Optimists and DN-Optis. "Our goal is to build a few softwater hulls this summer," says George, "and to also build a few DN-Optis, which are basically mini-DNs that use the off-the-shelf Opti rig."

The DN class has a major effort underway to get more kids into iceboating, and this is the trainer for DNs. In the future, it may even have a "scholarship" for the US champion to particapte in the DN World Championship (which switches between US and Europe).

The cost to get involved is very favorable. George reports they built DN hulls for about $450 a hull, but the DN-Opti is significantly smaller and cheaper. George figures the Opti softwater hulls might come in at $300 or so per hull without hardware, but a lot is contingent upon how many people build. Materials are much cheaper in bulk, especially epoxy. So if there are more people building, the costs for everyone go down.

By production line crafting of the boats, a significant amount of time is saved because most of the time spent in a project like this is setting up the saw for a cut or a jig for a boat.

If anyone is interested, they should call or email George Siegle. Reach him by e-mail at sieglege@msu.edu or by phone at: 517.337.0489.

Siegles Look to get Back to Lightning Racing - Need Baby Sitter for Sundays

Eyrin Christiana Siegle -
Now 4 Weeks Old

Do you know of a responsible teen who can take care of a young baby on Sunday afternoons all summer?

Ann and George Siegle would like to get back to racing in late May and are looking for a teen to sit for their now-4-week-old daughter from noon to 4:30 pm on Sundays.

Most of the nice- weather days this could even be at the Lansing Sailing Club, otherwise, the Siegles will transport the teen to and from their East Lansing home.

Market rates (depending on teen's age and experience) will apply. Contact Ann Siegle at 337-0489 or asiegle@paradise-graphic.com.

By the way, according to Ann, the name "Eyrin" is the Irish form of Irene and translates to "Peace."
