Moody Wins Twice, Koster Once As Lightning Race Season Kicks Off

Lightning Racing
Sunday
Skippers Mtg 12:30
First Race 1:00 pm

April 29: Blaine Severin and Elias Strangas
May 6: Bill Pratt and VOLUNTEER WANTED

Frame taken from video aboard "Moody's Booty" Sunday shows Mike at the helm and Koster boat astern.

Sunday brought some excitement over and above the start of the 2007 Lightning Racing Season when Merrick Hurlbutt broke his mast. Ouch!

Using the back stay to pull the mast forward so that a highly tensioned shroud could be attached, the mast snapped at the spreader. Merrick is picking up a new mast this week and will be ready to sail this coming Sunday.

On the water, Mike Moody got Susanna Tellschow and Jim Fletcher on board for his initial effort. Their combined effort resulted in two first place finishes. In the third race, Mike seemed to be in good position to score a third bullet - but apparently miscounted the number of legs they had sailed. Larry Koster took advantage and went home with a first to go with his two second place finishes.

Mike attached a video camera to his mast and recorded a significant amount of his time on the water. We're now waiting for a report from Mike on whether the video proves helpful.

Detailed results and standings will be available soon through a link on the "Racing" page of the Lansing Sailing Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Ooops! There's a Hole in the LSC Fence

Damage to the LSC fence

Last Wednesday evening, a Lake Drive motorist lost control - apparently trying to avoid hitting a deer - and drove through the Lansing Sailing Club fence. No one was hurt, but LSC is left with a repair job.

The damage is just to the right of the gate coming into the Club, and includes the loss of several evergreens in addition to the fence. Unfortunately, the evergreens aren't easily replaced.

Thanks to the quick action of several LSC members led by Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher, pictures were taken, a temporary barrier created, the debris removed and steps are underway to obtain materials to make repairs.

Engagements: Scott and Adrianne, Susanna and Stephen

Several weddings are in view for Lansing Sailing Club members.

Scott Watkins wrote recently to tell us "I took the plunge this off-season, bought a ring, and Adrianne and I are now engaged. We're planning an April 2008 wedding here in Lansing, and are looking forward to celebrating with our LSC friends." Scott and Adrianne Tuttle have been loyal crew aboard Merrick Hurlbutt's Lightning for several years. In addition, Scott has been sailing his Laser on Wednesday evenings.

Susanna Tellschow and Stephen Wagner have a mid-November 2007 wedding date set - after the LSC Banquet and before Thanksgiving. Susanna came out to the Club in the Fall of 2003, having never sailed, and started crewing. In 2004 she became a member and started sailing Sunfish. She has become a very competent sailor and now drives a Lightning on Sundays and a Laser on Wednesdays. Stephen began coming out to the Club with Susanna several years ago and has done some crewing. In addition, Stephen's photography often turns up on the LSC website or in e-Sheet.
