"Pay Your Dues" Gathering Tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb 7)

Pay Your Dues
Gathering at Spags
Wednesday
Feb 7 - 6:30 pm

2007 Season sign-up coming soon.

Don't forget to head over to Spagnoula's Wednesday evening (Feb 7) about 6:30 to join in the annual "Pay Your Dues" social event. Jim Fletcher will be your host. Enjoy getting back together with some of your sailing friends. Order dinner if you want (Wednesday is the pasta special) - or enjoy some liquid refeshment along with some good discussion.

Members will also be able to sign up for their Race Committee assignment. Sign-up is always on a "first come-first serve" basis - so this is the best way to get your preferred date.

Annual statements for dues and fees went to members by email several weeks ago. This is the first time they have been delivered by email - a cost saving measure as well as a more efficient means of communication. If any member did not receive their statement (or it can't be found), please contact Commodore Pat Dolan by email at patrick@dolan.name or by phone at 517-214-6568.

The deadline for paying dues is February 10th.

Head to the Web for Sailing Shows

The major networks have abandoned sailing, except for a rare show - usually produced with a demonstrated lack of enthusiasm for our sport. However, there are other options developing on the web. And, with most new television sets being able to take input from computers, redirecting shows through a laptop (or other pc) to the television provides a very good picture on the large screen.

While web broadcasts are in their infancy and still taking baby steps - they are beginning to be more plentiful.

www.sail.tv is dedicated to covering sailing and currently runs continuous coverage in four areas: "Sailing News", the "World Match Race Tour", "Boat Show", "The Sailing Channel" and "Action". In addition, they have a series of "on demand" shows. On a high speed connection, the picture quality is excellent.

The World Match Racing Tour is covered at http://www.worldmatchracingtour.com/ and high quality broadcasts of past events are also available.

www.t2p.tv covers many of the major sailing events with a show put on their web site after racing has concluded for the day and they have had time to do some editing. Their web site has a number of other sailing video features including boat handling and interviews. Low resolution video is available free and a high resolution, stereo version is available for $6.95 a month.

ESPN 360 (http://broadband.espn.go.com/ivp/splash), occasionally carries sailing - often featuring Gary Jobson productions of important sailing events.

So, try one or more of these "channels" out when you need your sailing fix.

LSC Veterans Share Pavillion Building Stories

At the invitation of Commodore Pat Dolan, LSC members that participated in the building of the original LSC Pavillion in 1984 shared their recollections of that project. Three members came to a meeting last Wednesday and others provided information by email and by phone.

Sitting around the Dolan dining room table Wednesday evening, Walt Benenson, Walter DeGruyter and Jim Fletcher brought the early eighties to life again - recalling a number of humorous moments as well as providing helpful insights about the decision process and the actual building effort.

"Although there was concern about the possibility of losing members if dues were increased, everyone seemed to realize the need for a clubhouse of some kind," reported Walt DeGruyter. "The Blue Barn was sinking and much of the floor constantly under water," added Walt Benenson.

"That started a discussion that provided a number of insights that will be valuable to the Club as we face up to some problems that need attention in 2007," said Commodore Dolan. "I'm planning to prepare a recap so the Lansing Sailing Club has this valuable information for future planning."

In addition, Larry Koster has contributed pictures taken during construction of the LSC Pavillion. These will soon be available on the LSC web site - watch e-Sheet for more information on this.
