Racing began a little late Sunday as LSC volunteers wrapped up race management for the MSU "Cedarfest" Regatta. There was plenty of wind left over by the collegians however and six Lightning crews went at it in the final fleet race of 2006.

Aboard "Wind Dancer" was Tom Vickers, a guest Lightning sailor from Crescent Sail Yacht Club who was in town to watch his daughter Lindsey crew for MSU. Tom tucked himself into the front of the boat during the first two races as Pat Dolan and then Gil Chesbro took turns at the helm - then took over the tiller himself for the finale of the season at Lake Lansing. Vickers acquitted himself well, scoring a bullet.

Susanna Tellschow was at the helm of "Moody's Booty" with Commodore Mike crewing along with Stephen Wagner. Susanna showed how skilled she has become in only a little over a year of driving the Lightning - winning the first race and finishing second in the remaining two races.

Larry Koster, Michael-Soloman Jost and Gary Marx were aboard "Shibumi". This trio sailed to the tune of 2-6-3. Their first race was particularly well sailed as they pushed the first place boat all the way to the end, consistently finding wind on the left side of the course.

Jonathan Ahlbrand, although shorthanded with only John LeFevre on board as crew, nevertheless sailed well - much better than their final numbers (5-4-5) showed.

Blaine Severin put in another solid performance. Blaine was aided by veteran crew Julie Pierce and Tom Deits. They showed particularly exceptional speed on the downwind legs and finished with a fourth, a third and a fourth.

Jim and Maribeth Fletcher, had some very good moments, particularly in one race where they led the fleet for two legs. In the end however, without the third person they were at a disadvantage and lost ground in the key boat handling situations where those extra hands make a difference.

Gil Chesbro took a turn at the "Wind Dancer" helm to show that he still has the touch. It took a couple of legs for Gil to begin feeling really comfortable, but then showed his stuff at a leeward mark rounding to get inside the second place boat - and quickly tacked to starboard to be in phase. When he came back onto port in the next left hand shift, Gil was in front of the fleet - and stayed there to the end.

Pat Dolan was third in his stint at the "Wind Dancer" helm, but had already locked up first place in fleet racing for the fourth consecutive year. Mike Moody again finishes second for the season. Mike has finished second each year since 2001 when he was Fleet Champion.

Detailed results and standings can be found soon through links on the "Racing" page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

    MSU Cedarfest Regatta

MSU's Mills Forni and Lindsey Vickers (MSU-15) come up fast on the leaders.

Lake Lansing was the venue for Midwest Collegiate sailing over the weekend. Thirteen teams participated in the 2006 MSU "Cedarfest" regatta.

This is a special event for the Lansing Sailing Club too as LSC volunteers provide race management for the regatta.

To minimize possible differences between boats, each team rotates from one boat to another during the regatta - eventually sailing two races in each boat for a total of 26 races.

LSC's Mike Moody, Principal Race Officer for the MSU Cedarfest Regatta, monitors the action.

This year, light air made it impossible to complete a full rotation of races - but our LSC volunteers did a great job, particularly with the wind conditions.

The Michigan State University Sailing Team finished second in the event with Steve Griffin winning "B" Division and Mills Forni the runner-up in "A" Division.

Many thanks to LSC volunteers Jonathan Ahlbrand, Bob Brook, Doug Carlson, Pat Dolan, Alanna Harvey, Merrick Hurlbutt, Olav Messerschmidt, Bob Miller, Mike Moody and Blaine Severin for their terrific work.

    Neil Harrision Looking for Advice

If any of our readers have had experience with an Islander 30, Neil would like to talk with you. Reach Neil by email at nharrison@messa.org or by phone at 517-676-6340.

Docks Out Saturday - Assignments Posted

    LeFevre Sails Wawasee Regatta

John LeFevre with Susanna Tellshow and Stephen Wagner took Sail Fevre on the Road to Wawasee Yacht Club for the Hoosier Regatta the first weekend in October.

You may recall this trip last year was marred by a blown engine and running out of fuel in Amish country.

The trip went very smoothly with 24 boats racing in light winds on Saturday and Sunday. A total of 5 races were run with Skip Diebold from the Quantum Sailing team winning the regatta handily. The best Michigan boat was John McRee with the Bay City "Sleeper" crew of Dave Corcoran and Rachel Dey taking 5th place. Sail Fevre was able to beat a few boats each race and improve as the regatta went on.

Getting a good start was a challenge. The race committee enjoyed setting a very short starting line and watching the hulls pile up. With that many boats, everyone seemed to luff up to a spot on the line, stall the boat, and then try to get a little speed just before the start. Just about the time you would get it figured out and get off the line in clear air, there was a general recall (4 in all for the regatta).

The organization and hospitality for this regatta was terrific. The club goes out of their way to make you welcome with all visiting boats and crew staying at club member homes. We were also treated with a tour of the lake on a 1955 Cris-Craft runabout on Sunday afternoon before heading out.

Lake Wawasee is a 160 mile drive and well worth your time if it fits in to your 2007 regatta plans. They have moved up their traditional late October date to early October which they hope will continue to draw more lightning sailors.
