Although the sailors would have opted for more wind, there was enough to get in four races - and this last evening of Wednesday sailing in 2006 was fabulous. Twenty-one sailors participated and a record crowd went to Spags afterward where the Quizmaster got all but four with the Race Rules Quiz.

John Fishbeck won the first race of the evening and with it, enough points (237) to slide past Neil Harrision into first place in the Sunfish Season Standings. Congratulations John.

Neil Harrison has to be among the most improved sailors for 2006. He finishes second with for the season 227 points after being sixth in 2005.

Dennis Dudley won the contest for third place with 170 points, followed closely by Jim Fletcher in fourth with 163. Dave Vietti was fifth with 152 and Alanna Harvey sixth with 120. Michael-Soloman Jost (85 points), John Quensen (64 points) and Jamie Rasmussen (55 points) also qualified for a season series award.

On the Laser side, Doug Carlson collected 3953 points for his best 28 races (half of the races sailed in 2006) to lead the Laser Fleet. Mike Moody was second with 3728 points. For some time, Doug and Mike have dominated the Laser Fleet. Since 2000, Mike has won the Fleet Championship three times (in 2000, 2001, and 2004). Doug won the top spot in 2002, 2003, 2005 and again in 2006. Good job Doug!

Olav Messerschmidt collects the third place trophy with 3428 points while George Siegle is fourth with 2913.

Susanna Tellschow moves up smartly in the fleet with 2291 points and a fifth place finish, just edging out Bob Miller on the last Wednesday of racing. Bob ends in sixth place with 2274 points. Bob also improved significantly in 2006 after finishing ninth last year.

Also qualifying for season series awards were Laser sailors Pat Dolan (1899 points), Blaine Severin (1732 points) and Wayne Loescher (768 points).

All Ye Buccaneers - "Talk Like a Pirate" Day Be 'Comin

Arrr! I don't recall askin' ye for yer thoughts, ye scurvy bilge-drinkin' tar-merchant. Avast yer gob afore I keelhaul ye an' string yer bones from the crow's nest. Now ye be direct'n yer eyes and ears to the Cap'n. Arrr!

Not two weeks t'go mates. Tuesday the 19th of September be "Talk Like a Pirate" Day.

"That time in September when sea dogs remember
That grown-ups still know how ta play!
When wenches are curvy and dogs are all scurvy
And a soft-wear patch covers your eye,
Ta hell with our jobs, for one day we're all swabs
And buccaneers all till we die!

"So hoist up the mainsils and shut down your brain cells,
They only would get in the way,
Avast there, me hearty, we're havin' a party,
    It's "Talk... Like... A Pirate" Day! "*

    Arrr!

RC Captain Anna Hamilton Off to College

    Anna before racing Wednesday

Anna Hamilton, the Lansing Sailing Club's Wednesday Race Committee Captain has launched a new chapter in her life.

She is off to college, studying at Lansing Community College.

Our thanks to Anna for a great job. Not only does she run the races, but her enthusiasm and sense of fun make our time on the water even more enjoyable.

A bonus for LSC is that we end the season with all our clipboards. In 2005, Anna accidently fell overboard with the clipboard and it was lost to Davey Jones.

The sailors bought dinner for Anna at Spags to celebrate - but pocketbooks weren't raided too badly as she ordered water and french fries.

Chesbro Finally Gets to Sail - and Wins Two

Gil Chesbro finally found a Wednesday he could sail - and showed everyone that he still knows fore from aft, sailing a 2-7-1-1 evening. Larry Koster dusted off his Sunfish hat and finished the cycle - competing in Lightning, Laser and Sunfish fleet racing.

John Fishbeck won the first race and added a second among his four finishes. Neil Harrison started the evening with a third, then showed everyone why he led the fleet standings for so long with a win in the second race.

Dennis Dudley and Jim Fletcher both had a second and a third among their finishes while John Quensen had a third in his best race of the year to account for the remaining top spots in the Sunfish Fleet.

Detailed results and standings can be found soon through links on the "Racing" page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Moody in Top Form - Wins Three

    Mike Moody

Mike Moody was in top form Wednesday, winning the first three races, then adding a third in the final. Getting good starts in all the races put him in good position, but he also had to make good decisions and handle the boat well as he was in close competition all evening, pressed by Doug Carlson and Olav Messerschmidt.

Doug put four seconds on the board while Olav ended the season with a win after posting third place finishes in the first three races.

Susanna Tellschow, in only her second year of sailing, got a late start for the first race but went on to add a fifth and two fourths. Her development as a sailor has been remarkable and she is now challenging the fleet leaders. Bob Miller and Pat Dolan got the other two fourth place finishes.

Detailed results and standings can be found soon through links on the "Racing" page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.
