  • Tellschow gets jump at Laser start

All day long the wind was very light on Lake Lansing Wednesday. But when the LSC sailors headed their boats to the race course, the wind filled in and, although light, was consistently from the northeast. In these conditions, Olav Messerschmidt and Doug Carlson showed everyone how to sail. Olav won the first race and before the night was over, added two second place finishes and a fourth to his accomplishments.

Doug started with a second, but turned it up a notch and put three first place finishes on the board. He also had a race rules quiz for the post racing Spags gathering that only five of the eighteen who assembled got right.

Mike Moody also top end results as he went 3-2-3-3. Susanna Tellschow racked up the other third place finish.

Nine Laser sailors enjoyed the evening on the water Wednesday. Seven of the nine enjoyed at least one top five finish.

Three Wednesday evenings of racing remain in the 2006 season. Come out and sail.

Nine Sunfish - Six Top Three Finishes

Showing how competitive this year's Sunfish fleet is, six of the nine Sunfish sailors registered at least one top three finish in their four races.

Eddie Fletcher, who just a few weeks ago began his Sunfish racing, has quickly become a force at the top of the fleet. Wednesday, he added two first place finishes to his growing list of bullets.

John Fishbeck, always fast in his Sunfish, had a 2-1-2-4 evening to be most consistently at the top of the fleet. Neil Harrison, whose Sunfish racing has taken a major leap forward this year, won the final race of the evening. He also had a third place finish in the first race.

Jim Fletcher showed everyone that you don't have to be thin as a rail to sail at the top of the fleet. Jim posted second place finishes in the second and fourth race. Dennis Dudley gathered third place finishes in the middle two races and Alanna Harvey finished the evening's racing with a third.

Matt Hurth is Junior Sailor of the Year for 2006

    Matt Hurth

Matt Hurth was named Junior Sailor of the Year for 2006 in an award ceremony Tuesday after Junior Sailing.

"Matt has really developed his sailing skills this year," said Coach Pat Dolan who also had Matt on board "Wind Dancer" for some Lightning racing.

Matt is in his second year of Junior Sailing at LSC and his rapid move up the learning curve positions him to begin getting in a Laser.

We look forward to seeing a lot more of Matt on the water.

Junior Sailors Wrap Up 2006 Season

    Cody Eggenberger sailing fast.

The LSC Junior Sailors had a good night Tuesday in their final outing of the 2006 season. Coach Mike Moody reports there were a couple capsizes before the first race but everyone got it back up with no problem.

"Matt Hurth managed to eject himself over the side going up wind," said Moody. "He went to hike hard in a puff and accidentally steered down sharply at the same time. The boat just went out from under him." There is nothing like experience.

" A couple of three and four boat, tight mark roundings shows me the whole group is getting better together," continued Coach Moody.

The coach was particularly proud of Austin Holden who is coming on strong here at the end of the season. was even in there. "He won the start on the last race," said Moody, "lead all sunfish around the windward mark, somehow tried to give it away by getting tangled up with the main sheet and jibing twice down wind, but was still in the lead at the leeward mark." Things began to go wrong then as he spun a couple of circles as others sailed by. However, his improvement is dramatic.

Tristan Eggenberger came out in the best shape on the final race as he took the inside after coming to the mark in a close last place and calmly jybed into the lead - then finished second. Brother Cody Eggenberger had a good night with a perfect Laser wind and a perfect four win score.

All the boats sailed in generally tight group without much separation. This made for some exciting racing and mark roundings. The water fight after sailing looked to be a tie reported the coach who then handed out snacks and awarded certificates. "It was fun to watch tonight," said the Coach, "and this is an enjoyable group to work with. There are no spoilers in this group."

Results and pictures from Tuesday Junior Sailing action are available on the LSC web site.

    LSC 2007 Positions and Program

While the LSC Annual Meeting won't be until November, now is the time for members to begin thinking about the role they want to play next year - and any special projects they want to see accomplished. Anyone wanting to serve in a position on the Board of Directors or other area of responsibility should contact Vice-Commodore Pat Dolan. This is also the time to put ideas forward concerning special programs or projects that need budget attention for 2007.
