Windy and 25 Capsizes Help Keep Sailors Cool in 98 Degree Heat

Moonlight Sail
August 4

  • August 6 - Two Volunteers Needed
  • August 13 - Two Volunteers Needed

  • Eddie Fletcher and Michael-Soloman Jost split tacks

It was blowing well enough Wednesday that Race Committee members Anna Hamilton and Jessica Messerschmidt kept track of the number of capsizes. They counted 25. Rare was the sailor who avoided getting wet.

Eight Sunfish sailors enjoyed a little natural air conditioning with Neil Harrison leading the way, scoring three first place finishes and a second. Dennis Dudley won the other race and had two seconds before capsizing and turning turtle in the final race of the day.

Dave Vietti was also consistent on this windy day - going 3-3-3-4. Eddie Fletcher and Dad Jim were second and third respectively in the final race to account for all the top three finishes.

Detailed results and standings can be found soon through links on the "Racing" page of the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Junior Racers Enjoy Capsizing on a Hot Day

    Tristan Eggenberger and Austin Holden

Not everyone capsized, but most of the Junior Sailors did was the wind came up Tuesday. They didn't mind much however, because the water was very refreshing on a day when temps were in the high 90s - and they all got the boats up quickly.

All of these Junior Sailors continue to improve - and the racing format enables them to learn even more quickly by observing what works and doesn't work both on their boat and on other boats.

Tuesday's wind gave them all a chance to hike and to learn how important it is to let the sail out when they wanted to turn downwind going around the windward mark.

Five Laser Sailors all Share Top Spots

Anna Getting Cooled Off After Laser Start

Mike Moody spun out on the downwind leg of the first race and George Siegle took full advantage by sailing by and going on to win. Mike was second and Cole Baar third.

Mike kept his boat under control the remainder of the night and went 1-1-2 in the final races.

George Siegle added two second place finishes before having to retire because his boat was full of water.

Bob Miller realized he had left his pfd on shore - so he missed the first race to go back and get it. He came back and sailed to a third place finish in the second race.

Susanna Tellschow missed the first two races, but borrowed a radial rig from Ann Siegle and finished third and first in the final two races of the evening.
