Hurlbutt, LeFevre and Severin Post Sunday Wins

Fourth of July
Picnic at LSC

  • July 2 - Two Volunteers Needed
  • July 8 - Sid Mook, Julie Pierce, Alanna Harvey, Bill Wadland, Neil Harrison
  • July 9 -Two Volunteers Needed

  • Leif Alton and John LeFevre

"It was a typical day of sailing on Lake Lansing," said Blaine Severin. " The NE wind shifted regularly through 60 degrees with some shifts up to 180 degrees. The velocity was anywhere from 1 to 8 knots." Mike Moody added "By the time the predicted northerly came in with just a little more strength, race three was over and boats were being put away."

Blaine reports the he and Merrick Hurlbutt battled at all marks in race one. " At the downwind finish, I came on starboard and leeward of Merrick at the pin (favored end) only to be thwarted by a 180 degree shift on the nose with spinnakers flying. Both boats drifted with George gaining fast from the rear. The final was Merrick, Blaine then George."

In Race 2 sailors saw John LeFevre in "Sail Fevre" take a boat end start and tack to port to catch the best wind on the right side. He never looked back. George and Ann Siegle were challenging the leaders in race two but spinnaker problems at the leeward mark set them back and they ended up second. Larry Koster and crew Michael-Soloman Jost were third.

In Race 3, Blaine and the flying pigs took a pin end start and crossed the fleet on port, gaining an unassailable position with wind filling from the left. Mike and Larry exchanged positions several times, with Mike prevailing for a second place finish. Larry Koster was third.

Macatawa Championship Tough on "Wind Dancer"

    Lightnings Return from Racing

The Macatawa Bay Yacht Club did a great job of hosting this year's Michigan Lightning District Championship last Saturday and Sunday. In addition to their organization, friendliness and wonderful racing venue - the wind cooperated. Although a bit light at times, the Race Committee got six races in.

Each day the sailors left the dock and flew spinnakers to the race course on Lake Michigan just off the Holland light house. As the day progressed, the wind continuously moved right. By the end of the day on Saturday, spinnakers brought the sailors back up the channel to the Club house - and on Sunday, it had moved so far right, it was a beat back to MBYC.

Pat Dolan, Susanna Tellschow and Bob Miller took "Wind Dancer" to compete. "It was quite a struggle," said Dolan. "Our inexperience sailing in chop really holds us back. Plus, the competition was very stiff." Regardless, the team enjoyed participating and did have some good moments.

Doug Carlson was also participating. Doug was in the middle position on Sean Fidler's new boat - which hadn't seen the water until launched at Macatawa. Larry Koster and spouse Louise joined the group on Saturday evening for dinner and sent a picture of the boats returning under spinnakers.

Editor's Note: In response to the "What is This - the Rest of the Story" article in the last e-Sheet (June22, 2006), several captions were suggested for the picture of a group of LSC sailors gathered around a boat at the edge of Lake Drive. Here are a few contributed by Michael-Soloman Jost. Other entries are welcome. Send them to publisher@lansingsailing.org.

Why did the boat cross the road on its own?

Not all skippers are as well versed in backing up their trailers ... so we gave a hand.

The turtle liked the swim, but boy oh boy, a boat full of water is really heavy - so we took a break.

There is beer "ponging" in East Lansing, beer keging at MSU, and then there is boat skegging at LSC.

    Saturday Morning Work Party

Rear Commodore Jim Fletcher is asking for some volunteers to show up Saturday morning at 10 to help with some things that need to be done at the Club. This may be just the ticket for members who have a duty obligation to make up.

Highest on list Jim wants to do is to get rid of the remnants of the rack that was torn down at Docks In - but has been mired in water until recently.

Anyone who has suggestions on things that need attention should contact Jim to get them on the "To-Do List".

July 4th, Moonlight Sail and Laser Regatta Coming Next Week

Next week will be another busy one at the Lansing Sailing Club.

Fourth of July. Plan to join in the Fourth of July celebration with a picnic starting at noon. After the picnic, we will set sail with a special on the water event. For those who want to join in a boat parade in the evening, we'll decorate the LSC Committee Boat and jump in with the rest of the armada.

There will be no Junior Sailing on the Fourth of July, but Junior Sailors and their families are invited to participate in the picnic, on-water activity and Lake Lansing Boat Parade.

Moonlight Sail. Friday is the first of two Moonlight sails. Bring a small dessert to share at 8 pm. and an adult beverage if you wish to partake in one. LSC will provide paper and plastic as well as soft drinks. About 9 pm., we will launch to enjoy an almost full moon which should already be up in the sky.

Laser Regatta. Saturday, July 8th is this year's Lake Lansing Laser Regatta. A one day event, the skipper's meeting begins at 9:30 am. with the first of six scheduled races beginning at 10 am.
