What is This?

Fourth of July
Picnic at LSC

  • June 25 - Wayne Loescher and Paul Marttila
  • July 2 - Two Volunteers Needed

  • There was no racing Sunday or Wednesday. High winds and threatening thunderstorms Sunday kept the sailors on the sideline. It was much the same story on Wednesday with a Tornado Watch in effect, thunder rumbling and lightning present, prudence sent everyone to an early dinner at Spags.

There was some excitment at the Lansing Sailing Club on Sunday however. Take a look at the picture. What do you think it is?

After you have a couple of guesses in mind, check below for "the rest of the story."

Junior Sailing Stuck with Light Air

    Junior Sailors have light air

Light air prevailed on the second evening of the 2006 Junior Sailing season. Coach Mike Moody used the time profitably however - focusing on items the new juniors will need to get their Junior Sailing Certificate.

Sailing upwind is the biggest challenge for new sailors, but this group is working hard to learn this important skill.

What is This - the Rest of the Story

    The rest of the story

It was bound to happen. Others have come close. But Sunday found one of our Lightning skippers needing to leave the Club to pick up something important.

The only problem is that the trailer was still attached to the vehicle. The good news is that no one was hurt and the boat does not appear damaged to the point of needing immediate repair work. Good and bad news is the trailer riding behind the vehicle is so quiet you don't even know it's there.

So "This" is the line a skeg makes as the boat falls off the trailer while being dragged down the road. The hook at the end of the line represents a u-turn as the forestay came in contact with the power line - bounding the boat backward.

Competition for awards at the Annual Awards Banquet is officially open now if it wasn't before.

    Doug's Club Boat Corner
Proper Storage of Safety and Committee Boats

    Club Boat Director Doug Carlson

Ed Note: This is the first in a series by LSC Club Boat Director Doug Carlson. The regularity will depend on Doug's time, new ideas and questions from members regarding the use and care of the club boats.

It is important for both the longevity of boat lifts and boats that they are stored properly at the end of the day. Following these simple instructions will help insure their safe keeping.

    Safety Boat
When returning the Safety boat to the lift, be sure the boat is positioned as fare forward as possible on the lift prior to raising it. This keeps the bow elevated and ensures that water is able to drain out while in storage. Additionally, be sure to raise the lift up as far as possible. Closing the gap between the boat and cover minimizes the rain and dirt that gets in the boat while on the lift. Also, there is no need to tilt the engine.

    Committee Boat
It is also important that the Committee boat lift is raised until it reaches the stops on the lift frame. This transfers the weight of the boat to the vertical supports and reduces the weight on the lifting cable during storage. Not only does this keep the boat out of the water, it reduces strain on the lift and will ensure a long life for this important club asset.
