  • Bob Miller Gets Leeward Heel

Not only did Olav Messerschmidt lead all Laser sailors in Wednesdays racing, but he was on the prevailing side of the rules quiz at Spags later in the evening.

Olav started with a fourth, but won the next two races and finished second in the last race of the evening. Doug Carlson sailed solidly too, winning the first and last race while finishing third and second in the middle races.

George Siegle and Mike Moody were also on their game in a tough highly variable wind day. George went 3-2-3-6 while Mike went 2-4-4-3. Bob Miller had one of his best nights of racing, scoring 6-5-10-7.

Three women were among the Laser sailors. Leading the women was Susanna Tellschow, whose total score of 29 (7-7-5-10) was one point better than Ann Siegle's 30 (5-11-6-8). Courtney Thompson, new to Laser racing, continues to improve.

Junior Sailing Attracts a Good Sized Group

Junior Sailors learn about rigging a Sunfish

LSC's 2006 Junior Sailing season got underway Tuesday evening with a dozen young sailors participating. About half the group was in last year's program and the opening day was their opportunity to become refreshed. A number of LSC Sunfish owners have generously made their boats available for these Junior Sailors to use.

The other half of the group had little or no sailing in their background - but they were quickly rigged and on the water reaching back and forth.

The first four sessions of 2006 will focus on skill development. Thereafter, the sailors will begin the racing portion of the season. Several of the Junior Sailors are now ready to begin sailing Lasers.

Board of Directors to Meet Sunday

Commodore Mike Moody has called a meeting of the Lansing Sailing Club Board of Directors for Sunday after Racing. Among the topics, fixing the Sunfish-Laser launch area where sand has been washed away, leaving the plastic grid exposed will be discussed. Also up for discussion is a request by kayakers for some sort of membership that will enable them to keep and launch their boats at LSC.

    Harrision is Sunfish Leader

Neil Harrision celebrates after winning the second race

Neil Harrison, a trim and fit 150 pounds, won two of the three Sunfish races and finished second in the third. Neil had his boat going fast in tough conditions. Light winds made it hard to find and keep clear air - but Neil did.

Dave Vietti was hot on Neil's stern in two races, finishing third and second - then won the final race of the day. Dennis Dudley also kept improving with each race, going 4-3-3.

John Quensen sailed his first races as a Sunfish skipper on Lake Lansing in his newly acquired boat. Michael-Soloman Jost, also a new Sunfish sailor this year, also shows improvement. Jamie Rasmussen had her new sail on the rig, and plans to get her window in the sail Saturday - as well as putting telltales on.
