A Berm Gets Planted

Scott Watkins watering the new plantings

A berm went in this week on the south property line and a group of members came to the Club Sunday to plan evergreens and shrubs on the new mound.

Pat Dolan rented a Bobcat for half a day last week and molded about 45 yards of dirt into a berm that runs about 130 feet from the Clubhouse toward the road. Wayne and Judy Loescher brought some arborvitae purchased at 75% off to plant along with a number of other plants donated. The berm will help keep root balls of the plants from becoming too wet in an area of the property that doesn't drain well.

In addition to the arborvitae, Red Twig Dogwood, Ninebark and yews were planted. Scott Watkins, Paul Marttila, Bill Davidson, Ian Clemens, Bob Miller and Pat Dolan joined Wayne and Judy Loescher to complete the plantings. There is still some space for plantings on the berm, but Wayne is looking for some shade tolerant plants for this remaining area.

Carlson and Tellschow Do Well at Pumpkin Head

Doug and Susanna returning from Pumpkin Head

Doug Carlson and Susanna Tellschow represented the Lansing Sailing Club at Saturday's Pumpkin Head Laser Regatta on Reeds Lake in Grand Rapids - and did very well. In a twenty five boat field, Doug finished third and Susanna eighth.

Our sailors reported some highly variable winds. "It was easy to sail into a dead spot," said Doug in reporting that even some of the best sailors there were victims.

Susanna reports that her best race was a fifth. This is a real accomplishment for someone who got on a Laser for the first time earlier this summer and is completing only her second full season of sailing.

LSC Lightnings Delivered to Gull Lake for National Championship

Blain Severin delivering his Lightning to Gull Lake

When the National Collegiate Sloop Championship is sailed next weekend (Oct 28-30), more than half the boats used will be Lightnings from the Lansing Sailing Club.

In all, seven Lightnings will come from Lansing Sailing Club Lightning owners. A total of twelve boats are needed, one each for ten collegiate teams plus two boats that are available in the event of breakdowns.

Blaine Severin, Neil Harrison, John LeFevre, Merrick Hurlbutt, George Siegle, Mike Moody and Pat Dolan are the Lightning owners who have made their boats available. This is a real commitment because they also need to be delivered to the Gull Lake regatta site and picked up after the championship.

Lansing Sailing Club members come through again!
