LeFevre Wins Two

John LeFevre

John LeFevre won two races in yesterday's Lightning Fleet racing. John credited his crew, Blaine Severin and Tom Deits. "They called the shifts right and picked the side of the course we needed to be on," said John. Driving "Unidentified Flying Pigasus" on this day, John and crew got excellent starts, found the first shift, and battled Larry Koster for command of the races.

Larry Koster, Michael-Salomon Jost and Neil Harrision sailed solidly all day in "Shibumi" and were in first place often. They ended up with two seconds and a third.

In the third race, "Wind Dancer" had the best start, but Koster and crew quickly overtook them and led until just before the end of the third leg in a six leg race. "Wind Dancer" and "Shibumi" had both tacked short of the starboard lay line with "Wind Dancer" pinned ahead and slightly to leeward. However, a header enabled "Wind Dancer" to tack and cross, moving into the lead.. "Dancer", sailed by Bob Miller, Gil Chesbro and Pat Dolan, went on to win the third race. "Shibumi" was caught by "Moody's Booty" on the final leg and ended up third.

Merrick Hurlbutt and Scott Watkins put a third place on the board in the first race, but were at a disadvantage with only two on board as the day wore on and the wind speed kept increasing. Mike Moody took on an old LSC friend, Doug Bohl, as middle crew and called junior sailor Doug Crawford to work the front of the boat. They kept improving all day and finished with a third in race two and a second in the final race of the day. Doug Bohl was in town for a wedding and it was good to see him again. Doug has newly acquired a Flying Scot and the Bohls have become members of a sailing club near Annapolis where Doug works for the Department of Defense..

LSC Sailors Do Well at Weekend Regattas

Susanna Tellschow

Mike Moody

Doug Carlson

LSC members sailed out of town regattas last weekend and did very well.

Susanna Tellschow crewed in the Flying Scot Regatta held on Portage Lake and helped her skipper bring home the first place hardware.

The Flying Scot regatta at Portage Yacht Club this year brought 17+ boats and good wind. Scots with their two man crew came from a variety of clubs, and Susanna found it fun to see familiar faces from last year.

Kent Davis from the Crystal Sailing Club invited Susnna to crew again for this event, and they placed first, with a score of 1-1-3-1-2 for 5 races over two days. This is the second year in a row that Susanna and Kent have won a Flying Scot Regatta.

Susanna said, "It was a fun learning experience. With Scots sailing two handed, the spinnaker runs are certainly exciting - and our comeback in the third race from a big "over early" was very satisfying." Susanna also reported great hospitality, well run races, and a good time. She would love to go again!

Meanwhile, Mike Moody and Doug Carlson participated in the Pontiac Yacht Club Laser Regatta that attracted most of the top Laser sailors in eastern Michigan. Doug finished seventh with 38 points and Mike was one point behind in eighth place.

Mike won the fourth race (of seven) in the twenty-two Laser field. His 39 points also included two sixths, an eighth and two ninths. Mike discarded a tenth place finish.

Doug went 10-4-7-3-5-9-12, discarding the twelve for his 38 points.

Rick Rothenbuhler won the Pontiac Laser Regatta with 13 points. Craig Pearson was second with 16 points, Paul Hulsey third with 17 points. Racing was obviously very tight at the top.

Paul Offer was fourth with 26 points with Sean Fidler one behind at 27. Sean was the winner of the 2005 Lake Lansing Laser Regatta.
