John Fishbeck is Sunfish Champ

John Fishbeck showing one of his winning techniques

John Fishbeck finished the season Wednesday evening with two firsts, a second and a third - and is the Sunfish champion for 2005. John put sixteen first place finishes in fleet racing on the board in his quest for the number one spot - almost twice as many as the next best effort by Jim Fletcher who had nine.

Gil Chesbro finished in second place for the 2005 season. Gil's twenty race point total was based on eight first place finishes, eleven seconds and one third.

Laser Season Champ is Doug Carlson

Doug Carlson on his way to a win Wednesday

Twenty-two Laser sailors participated in Wednesday racing this year. With fifty-one races sailed, the best twenty-five results count for season scoring honors - and the skipper at the top of the list is Doug Carlson. Doug used eighteen first place finishes and seven seconds to amass his winning total of 3507 points.

Coming in second, only eleven points behind with a 3496 total was Mike Moody. Mike was the defending champion from 2004 when he bested Doug by a slim five points. This year, Mike's total resulted from seventeen first place finishes and eight seconds. Mike sailed in all but one of the races in 2005.

Olav Messerschmidt was the third place finisher for the season. Olav's total of 3102 consisted of six firsts, six seconds, nine thirds and four fourths in his best twenty-five races.

Nine Laser sailors ended up qualifying for awards this season by sailing the requisite 25 races. Three additional Laserites were within four or fewer races of qualifying. This was an outstanding year of racing in terms of participants and boats at the line each week.

MSU Sailors Add Spice to Laser Wednesday Finale

Lasers converging on the leeward mark Wednesday

MSU Sailing Team members Rob Linden and Casey Ray joined in the Laser racing Wednesday and showed that they have become solid single-handed sailors. Rob suffered a traveller breakdown in the first race - but fixed it and then went on to score a first, second and third in the remaining races. Casey had a second and third to go with two fourths. Together they accounted for more than half of the top three spots available for the night's racing.

Mike Moody had calculated that he could wrest the season championship from Doug Carlson by taking all four of the races. However, Doug threw a wet blanket on that plan right away with a win in the first race. Doug also had a second place finish in the second race.

Mike did make a run tonight, getting second in the first race, fourth in the second race and then finishing with two wins in the final two races of the year. George Siegle had second and third place finishes in the final two races to round out the top three spots in the four races sailed.

Five Sunfish Sailors Score Top Three Finishes

Sunfish sailors getting off the starting line Wednesday

Seven Sunfish sailors came to sail on the final Wednesday race day of 2005 and five walked away with one or more top three finishes. Gil Chesbro and John Fishbeck got the most of these, each scoring two first place finishes, Gil adding two seconds and John a second and third.

Dennis Dudley had a second in Race two while Dave Vietti had a third in the final race. Susanna Tellschow finished her Sunfish season by adding two third place finishes.

Susanna Tellschow Qualifies for Both Sunfish and Laser Awards

Susanna on her way to a third place finish in Race 1 Wednesday

Susanna Tellschow finished her second season of single-handed sailing Wednesay by meeting the 20 race requirement to qualify for a Sunfish Fleet award. Last week she got the races necessary to qualify for a Laser Fleet award when she sailed her 26th Laser race of the year.

This feat has been accomplished only once before recent LSC history. Gil Chesbro qualified in both Lasers and Sunfish in 2001 when he got exactly the 28 Laser races he needed as well as satisfying the Sunfish Fleet requirement of twenty with three to spare. Gil won the Sunfish season championship that year.

Dennis Dudley Remembers Jim Crain

Editor's Note: After racing on Wednesday, LSC members toasted former member Jim Crain who passed away in Port Charlotte, Florida on August 29, 2005. They also shared some stories that showed how much they enjoyed sailing with him. Jim crewed for Dennis Dudley for several years when Dennis sailed a Lightning. In addition to the stories told Wednesday at Spags, Dennis adds these. We hope they spark fond memories of Jim by those members who knew him - and bring a smile to the faces of those who weren't that fortunate.

Jim had the habit of sitting on the boom on downwind legs. One day, the wind shifted on the downwind leg of a race and got behind the main - gybing the boat and tossing Jim from his perch on the boom, across the boat and into the water.

Once Jim was on race committee for a 4th of July club fun race. That year we had a race before lunch then we came into to eat and tap the beer keg. The race committee remained on the course. This seemed unusual because Jim liked his beer. After about an hour the committee was still on the water. Since It was a blazing hot day, we discussed this rather odd situation and then had another beer. Finally, some one decided to check on them. They had failed to check the gas level and had run out of fuel but were so emabarassed that they refused to make any motions of distress. So they sat and baked in the sun for an hour in the middle of the lake.

Another time Jim, another of my former Lightning crew ( Ken Zielinski) and I bought a boat together as partners. (This is the 28 foot Pearson Triton that I still own.) We kept the boat in Bay City for the summer and took it up the Saginaw River for the winter where we stored it in the boat yard that we found it in originally. The plan was that Ken and I would take the boat up the river and Jim would drive from Bay City to the Saginaw boat yard to meet us. As we pulled out of the marina and into the river we noticed Jim was waving to us with both arms in a rapid manner. We remarked about this unusual display of affection. This was before cell phones. When we got to Bay City we were greeted by my wife who was not very happy. She had to drive from Mason to Bay City because Jim forgot to get the car keys before we left. He had walked to the local bar, called Mrs. Dudley, and then proceeded to drink several beers while he waited for us. Jim didn't drive home!

One time he met my friend Tom Day. We were on Day's boat in Tawas Bay. Jim lit up a cigar and proceeded to flick ashes on Day's boat! Jim like to test people.

A few years ago he was in a retirement center in Florida. I was paying his bills, etc. One day I got a call from the manager. He begged me to buy Jim his own TV. It seems that Jim had the habit of going up to the TV in the community room and switching it to whatever channel he wanted to watch. He would tell the other elderly residents that they didn't need to watch whatever they had been watching. They should watch his program!
