Racing Starts at 6 PM for the Remaining Wednesday Races

A reminder to all Laser and Sunfish sailors. The starting time for remaining Wednesday racing is 6 PM. This earlier start time is due to the reduced amount of daylight as fall nears.

Juniors Continue to Excel

Faith Krogulecki gets some help from Marg Crawford

LSC Junior sailors continue to excel. Despite the competition of fall sports as everyone gets ready for the start of school, five sailors came to sail Tuesday evening. Four of them registered first place finishes - and the fifth had the second best night of racing in overall score.

Chris Miller, in only her second time racing, did some solid sailing and ended up with the second best overall results of the day - a fourth, a third and two seconds.

First place finishes were registered by Doug Crawford, Cody Eggenberger, Greg Scovill and Faith Krogulecki. Doug had to sit out the third race with a broken rudder - but he did get about 15 minutes of practice time sailing without a rudder, without incident. Greg got his boat going well about halfway through the evening and his first place finish in race three was so convincing the other sailors may as well have been over the horizon when he crossed the finish line.

Cody sails to windward with confidence

Conditions varied during the evening - challenging all the sailors. On the way to the race course, there was a very light wind from the northeast. Then a new wind came in - about 10-12 mph from the North. There was one capsize, quickly righted by Cody Eggenberger - although maybe he was just celebrating his second race win and the wind wasn't to blame. Faith, the smallest and lightest of all the sailors, showed she can handle more wind too - hiking her boat flat and keeping the top side up. Bottom line: these juniors showed increasing confidence in higher winds. Then the wind got very light and the sailors ghosted back to the launch area after the fourth race.

Watermelon, ice-cream cones and soft drinks capped the evening as coaches debriefed the evening's racing. For detailed results and an explanation of the handicap rating system used for our Junior Sailing Program, go to the racing page at www.lansingsailing.org and click on "Junior Sailing".

Twenty Lasers and Sunfish Sailors Turn Out

With two Wednesday's to go in the 2005 Laser and Sunfish fleet racing season, lots of boats were out looking for points - and enjoying a beautiful evening on the water (although a bit more wind would have been nice).

Neil Harrison started the evening off right on the Sunfish side with a win in race one. In race two it was Gil Chesbro doing a "horizon job" on the fleet. Maribeth Fletcher led the eight Sunfish sailors around the course in the final race of the evening.

John Fishbeck put a second place finish on the books while Dave Vietti bested that with two seconds. Dennis Dudley was third twice and Gil Chesbro third once to round out the top three finishers.

The twelve Laser sailors also spread honors around a bit. Mike Moody added two first place finishes and a third to his accumulation while Doug Carlson had a first and two seconds before calling it a night. Pat Dolan got the other bullet - his first of the year.

Olav Messerschmidt went 2-3-3-2 to add some nice symmetry to the evening. The remaining third went to Bob Miller.

Race Rules Quizmaster Tough on Sailors Again

Last week's Race Quiz brought by Doug Carlson to the group at Spagnola's featured a windward boat sailing down on a leeward boat as they headed for an offwind mark. By doing this, the windward sailor took the leeward boat's wind, and windward was soon clear ahead coming to the two length zone at the mark. Leeward protested the windward boat.

Last night's quiz builds on this same concept - although this time the boats are ahead and behind instead of windward and leeward. Two boats are sailing toward an offwind mark, one behind the other about a boat length. The boat ahead turns down as the boat behind begins to gain. Like last week, the boat turning down to keep the other boat from having an overlap by the time they reach the two length zone is protested for sailing below its proper course. Last week, sailors at Spagnoula's were heavily in favor of dismissing leeward's protest - and they were wrong. This week, the majority came down in favor of sustaining the protest.

The majority were wrong again. Rule 17.2 states: "Except on a beat to windward, while a boat is less than two of her hull lengths from a leeward boat or a boat clear astern steering a course to leeward of her, she shall not sail below her proper course unless she gybes."

Since the boat behind is not steering a course to leeward of the boat ahead, the boat ahead can sail down to protect an inside position. If the boat behind would have turned down, the boat ahead would not have been able to turn down too.

This quiz comes from a Dave Perry Book: 100 Best Racing Rules Quizzes, available from your favorite bookstore.

Doug Bohl to Visit LSC in September

A former member of LSC, and friend to many of us, will be visiting the Lansing area for a wedding in late September. Doug Bohl plans to be at the Club on Sunday, September 25th and hopes to catch a ride with someone on their Lightning.

Doug, Cori, Bailey and Noah now reside in the Annapolis area and sail their recently purchased Flying Scott on Chesapeake Bay where they belong to a local sailing club.

Steve and Doris Colgate

This month's featured article on the Colgate Offshore Sailing website is on how to bring your sailboat into a dock. Their series of tips are well written and worth reading. Even experienced sailors can learn a thing or two by checking them out.

Steve and Doris Colgate offer a wide range of sailing courses, including some just for women. A number of LSC members have participated in their courses - particularly the advanced racing course.
