Neil Harrison leading the fleet in race one on his way to a win

Ron and Jane Marshall sat in the shade at the Club and watched while their beloved "Oh m" was being raced by someone other than Ron and Jane. Susanna Tellschow took the helm of "Oh m" for her first Lightning Fleet Race as skipper. She certainly didn't look like a rookie. Susanna was second in race one - but hit the finish mark and had to do a circle and refinish for a fourth. In race two, she came from behind to finish in second place. Race three found her leading at the first mark, and the downwind buoy too. Although Ron and Jane cheered her on from the shore, she ended up third. Still - a successful start a rookie Lightning skipper can cherish.
On Board "Oh m" with Susanna was veteran Doug Carlson and newcomer David Watson. David stopped by the Club Saturday to check our crewing opportunities, took an orientation sail with the Vice-Commodore - and signed on to sail on "Oh m ".
Neil Harrison registered his first win of the 2005 Lighting Fleet season. He got off to a good start near the Committee Boat as the boats ghosted across the water in very light wind. First at the windward mark, he headed for home in a two leg race. Boats behind caught new wind and came up fast - but Neil held on for the win. In the next two races, they were in close competition - including some luffing duels with spinnaker flying - and finished the day 1-4-4.

"Wind Dancer" showed off a new front crew member. Cody Eggenberger sailed in his first Lightning race every - and showed he is ready for prime time. The crew went out to practice and worked through bear-away spinnaker sets, windward take-downs, roll tacks and a few other boat handling challenges. When the racing started however, it was the gybe set that needed to be executed - and he was up to the challenge. Cody, Bob Miller and Pat Dolan won races two and three.
Blaine Severin got his "regular" crew back. Julie Pierce was in front and Tom Deits in the middle. We missed you Tom - welcome back. They took third place finishes in the first two races - and held off a hard charge from Harrison and Tellschow in the final race for a second.
Thanks to Mike Moody, Jim Kennedy, Lisa Winters and Steve Jackson for their hard work on Race Committee - it wasn't an easy day for them. Lisa took pictures which have been converted into a picture story that can be found on the LSC web site.
