Lasers Welcome Guest Sailor Randy Juras

While other Lansingites were suffering in uncomfortable heat, a nice wind on the water provided air conditioning for twelve Laser sailors as they welcomed Randy Juras to sailing on Lake Lansing. Only in the last race did the wind unexpectedly go light and shift 60 degrees left as we were wrapping things up.

Doug Carlson won races two and four on the Laser side and added a third and second to round out his evening.

Mike Moody won the third race, finished second twice and third once. Joel Shapiro led all Lasers in the first race. George Siegle gathered up all the other top three positions with two second place finishes and a third.

Ann Siegle came to race for the first time in two years. What a pleasure to have her on the water - and she served notice that her sailing is still solid by finishing fourth in the final race. Guest sailor, Randy Juras, got in a Laser for the first time in "many" years and kept improving with each race. In a fast field, he posted a fifth in his best effort. Randy and spouse Anna are newlyweds settling into the Lansing scene to do grad work at MSU.

Jim Fletcher and John Fishbeck led eight Sunfish sailors around the course, each winning two races. Jim added a second and third to round out a fine evening of sailing. John had a second to go with his two bullets - but ran into equipment problems and was unable to sail one of the races.

Gil Chesbro brought home two second place finishes while Neil Harrison, Maribeth Fletcher and Dennis Dudley polished off the top three spots with a third place finish each.

Junior Sailing Program Begins Racing Season

Close competition on the reaching leg

The Junior Sailing Program's Racing season got launched Tuesday evening wioth ten sailor participationg on eight boats.

Most of the junior sailors have been in the program since mid-June but a couple began their paticipation in mid-July. With some basics behind them, the remainder of the summer will feature a racing format. Sailors will each receive ratings and the ratings will determine their start time - with higher ratings meaning a later start group. This handicap system gives each of the sailors an opportunity to finish in the top group as their sailing improves.

Doug Crawford, Junior Sailor of the Year last year, won the first of three races Tuesday. Alex Powell won the second race while Faith Krogulecki and Adrianne Powell teamed up to sail their Sunfish to a win in the final race.

More details on the racing program, including information on the rating system and start groups can be found on the LSC web site.

The Volvo Round-the-World Ocean Race scheduled to start this November will include a Disney Entry as part of their marketing for an upcoming "Pirates of the Caribbean" film sequel - and San Francisco sailor Paul Cayard has just been announced as skipper.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, once again stars Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann. Dead Man's Chest is currently being filmed in Los Angeles and the Caribbean and is due for release in July 2006.

The Volvo Ocean race takes eight months to complete, includes stops on every continent and will feature in-port fleet racing for the first time. One of the stops will be Annapolis in April and New York will be the site of a pit stop in early May.
