A Non-Start for Junior Racing - Will Try Again Next Tuesday

Some of the Junior Sailors waiting for the wind to moderate

Junior sailors showed up for the first evening of Junior Racing last Tuesday - but the wind wasn't cooperating. With winds above 17 mph about 6 pm, the decision was made to wait a while and see if they would moderate. However, over the course of the evening, the wind speed didn't come down enough.

Time wasn't totally wasted as the group reviewed the five basic rules of racing. 1 - Don't hit another boat, even if you have the right of way. 2 - Port tack boats must keep clear of starboard tack boats. 3 - When two boats are on the same tack but not overlapped, a boat behind must keep clear of a boat ahead. 4 - When two boats are on the same tack and overlapped, the windward boat must keep clear of the leeward boat. 5 - At a mark, an inside boat overlapping an outside boat gets to go first.

We'll try again next Tuesday. Junior sailors who prefer not to race are wecome to come and sail in the vicinity of the race course.

Fletcher Wins Three

Sunfish heading for the finish

Four Sunfish sailed Wednesday. Jim Fletcher posted three first place finishes along with a second to lead the fleet.

Neil Harrison, leading the Sunfish Sailors in the season standings going into Wednesday's action, had the misfortune of losing a protest that took away a first place finish. In the other races, Neil posted a second, third and fourth. Despite losing a first place finish, Neil is still tied for first place in season scoring honors with Gil Chesbro.

Gil Chesbro ended up winning Race 2 when a protest was upheld. Gil had disqualified himself in the first race, finished third in Race 3 and did not participate in the final race of the day.

Dennis Dudley cornered the remaining seconds and thirds for the day - finishing 3-3-2-2.

Four Laser Sailors Share Honors

George Siegle Wednesday

Doug Carlson had mom and dad on hand Wednesday to watch the racing - and they brought great weather with them to share with the eleven Laser sailors. Doug struggled in the first race with a fifth place finish, but then went 2-3-1 in the remaining contests.

Bob Miller had one of his best races of the year to finish the evening as he posted a fifth place result. Dave MacKenzie also sailed one of his best races of the year, leaving four boats eating his bubbles in the second race.

George Siegle had a good night of sailing, winning the second race and finishing second in the first and fourth races. His third race finish was a seventh.

Susanna Tellschow posts a third place finish

Joel Shapiro started the evening off by posting a win in the first race while Mike Moody brought home a bullet in Race 3. Mike added a third and two fourths to complete his evening of racing.

Olav Messerschmidt showed solid sailing with second and third place finishes to go with a fifth and a sixth

Susanna Tellshow has been sailing Lasers for a couple of weeks as a kind of "cross training" with the view of improving her Sunfish sailing. In the second race Wednesday, Susanna ended up in third place. Looks like her campaign plan may be working.
