Join in Moonlight Sail Friday - Skipper Saver Course on Saturday |
This Friday is a Moonlight Sail night at the Lansing Sailing Club. Commodore Mike Moody will be hosting this event. Bring a small dessert to share at 8 pm. Boats head out to watch the moonrise about 9 (moonrise is at 9:37). With the Committee Boat and Safety Boat along with several sailboats, there will be plenty of room.
On Saturday, the Lansing Power Squadron is conducting a "Skipper Saver" class at the Lansing Sailing Club. Anyone who spends time on the water should have this class in their background because it covers how to deal with the situation where someone other than the skipper is suddenly thrown into taking charge because of an emergency. For more details or to register call 517 676-1557. |
Fishbeck Wins Three Wednesday |
John Fishbeck leads the Sunfish fleet as the fourth race is sailed in a dying breeze. |
John Fishbeck returned to racing in 2005 with three first place finishes in Wednesday action. Maribeth Fletcher accounted for the other first place finish.
Nine Sunfish were on the water with the sailors enjoying a great evening. The temperature was just right, wind was in evidence all evening, and there were plenty of boats work for inside position at marks to make the laylines a touch place to hang out.
Gil Chesbro, sporting a golfing wound (too many swings), had two second place finishes and a third. Maribeth Fletcher had two third place finishes to go along with her first. Neil Harrison recorded two seconds and a third to round out the top three spots.

Time to Clean Up Around the Boat (and the Boat too) |
|
Commodore Mike reminds us all that members have the obligation to mow their parking or rack spaces and keep their boat as well as the area around it looking good. With the Fourth of July coming up, let's plan on not only getting the mowing done, but making sure out boats make a good impression for the guests we expect to have over the holiday.

Junior Sailors Continue to Make Progress |
Faith and Drew Krogulecki have got it together
|
For anyone just learning to sail, learning to get out of "Irons" is a major breakthrough. It certainly seems easy to get into "Irons" - a position where the boat's sail is just luffing, the boat is stopped and it doesn't want to get going again.
For Junior sailors, mastering the "get out of irons" skill sometimes takes a while - but now most of our Juniors have this under control. Tuesday was breakthrough day on this front for Faith Krogulecki. After a lot of frustration, suddenly the way to handle this became apparent - and just like that she is sailing the boat.
Faith's brother Drew is working on developing his hiking skills so he can take maximum advantage of a gust of wind to get the boat really moving.
The rest of the Junior sailors are also doing very well, impressing the coaches with how fast they are picking up sailing skills. |
