Moonlight Sail this Friday

Members and guests are invited to the Lansing Sailing Club Friday for dessert and a moonlight sail. Bring a small dessert to share at 8 pm. Boats head out to watch the moonrise about 9 (moonrise is at 9:37). With the Committee Boat and Safety Boat along with several sailboats, there will be plenty of room.

Fries Wins Sunfish Regatta - Vietti Top LSC Sailor

Boats headed out to the right side after the start of this race

Saturday's Annual Sunfish Regatta on Lake Lansing attracted seventeen sailors including nine from the Lansing Sailing Club. Winner for the third year in a row was Derrick Fries. Derrick took first place in all five races to leave no doubt as to who was to be the champion.

Alanna Harvey, Sunfish Fleet Captain, got excellent help from her fleet members and put on one of the best regattas. If she could have controlled the weather, it would have been perfect. Except for some rain during the lunch break and winds on the light side - sailors had a great day on the water.

John Fishbeck got his licks in early for the LSC sailors, scoring a third in the first race before he had to leave on other business. Dave Vietti took over at that point and led the LSC sailors. Third place finisher from last year, Mike Moody, and third place finisher from the year before, Pat Dolan, were frustrated this year and shot out the back of the pack.

Dan Norton ran off a bunch of second place finishes to secure the runner up spot with Nathan Zeigler third and Tom Katterheinrich fourth.

Complete results and a picture story can be found on the the LSC web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

"Wind Dancer" Wins Two In Light Air

"Sail Fevre" on the way to a third place finish

When the wind blew, it was quite nice - and the day was beautiful. The problem was that the wind would almost stop blowing for five to ten minutes at some point during each race. Even so, it was a great day to be on the water.

Mike Moody, Jamie Rasmussen and Jennifer McKervey got off to a good start in race one and kept extending to win convincingly. Three boats were vying for second place with "ShibumI" prevailing. Merrick Hurlbutt was half a length behind for third, just nipping "Wind Dancer".

Race two found Blaine Severin, followed by John LeFevre, substantially in front of the rest of the pack. On the second windward however, "Wind Dancer" struck out on her own to the right as the fleet was becalmed. When the wind filled in, it came in on the right, enabling Dolan, Chesbro and Tellschow in the "Dancer" to close the gap, then sail past the leaders on the downwind to win by a boat length. "UFP", with Julie Pierce and Geoff Severin sailing with Blaine, finished second. The "Sail Fevre" crew of John LeFevre, Leif Alton and Michelle LeFevre was only a half boat length behind for third.

The third race featured "Wind Dancer" leading the fleet to the right - but footing off and putting distance between them and the next boat. Soon they were sailing in their own wind and went on to win. "UFP" was second and "Moody's Booty" third.

Thanks to the smooth work of John Quensen and Bob Brook, who served as Race Committee, all three races ended up with solid windward leeward legs - despite big shifts and periods of calm.

Hello from the Bohls

The Bohls, former Lansing Sailing Club members, sent us a note with an update on their lives. Doug took a position with the Navy and the family moved to Annapolis. He is now working for a Navy lab (that won't be impacted by the new base closings). Corrine is running a foster care program, Bailey is seven and a half and Noah turned three.

Doug tells us that they have joined a local sailing club called the West River Sailing Club: www.sailingsource.com/wrsc/about.html and are happy to have a sailing home again. "Its a great club, very active racing/sailing with nice grounds and beach," says Doug. "They have a hoist for launching larger dry sailed boats and a beach launch area for some of the smaller ones. Now of course we couldn't joing a club like that and not get involved in racing at some level."

The Bohls are now the owners of a Flying Scot as of last weekend. Doug says "Its an older boat (Hull 3024, circa 1977) but has been sailed very little in its life. It really looks to be in excellent condition. This boat came from the factory "family rigged" rather than the racing rigged so there will be some work on my part to get blocks, cleats, etc. into better locations for sailing. My sunfish is being liquidated so that I can buy some equipment, new sails come to mind as the sails with the boat are the original 1977 sails! But regardless we are all really excited to have the boat and cannot wait to test her out on the water. There are two pretty active Scot Fleets right arround us so there is no shortage of racing options."

Doug is planning to be back in the Lansing area later this summer for a wedding and hopes to have time to stop by.
