Moody and Carlson Share Top Spots - Watkins Third |
Doug Carlson and Mike Moody |
There was plenty of excitement on the water Wednesday with the wind blowing above 15 some of the time. It was so nasty enough that only one Sunfish sailed.
As the evening went on, to make it even nastier, some rain and fog materialized.
Mike Moody recovered from being over early and came from behind to win race one in Laser sailing. Mike also took race three. Races two and four were won by Doug Carlson. Mike's first race come from behind victory was aided by what was described as the "Boat-Wind Conspiracy" in which Doug wanted to gybe coming to the leeward mark, but a major wind shift together with a gust of wind caused the boat to have other ideas. Said Doug, " Mike sailed a good race, was in position to take advantage of a mishap - and did."
Scott Watkins sailed solidly and ended the evening with four third place finishes. In all six Lasers participated.
The Sunfish sailor was Susanna Tellschow. What is it about high winds and rough weather that Susanna loves? The answer is that she improves her sailing a lot. As the evening wore on, Susanna found herself staying closer and closer to the Laser fleet whose start she shared.

| An Evening of Woe for George Siegle |
"Lattitude Adjustment" gets bottom checked |
Problems not of his making plagued George Siegle Wednesday. Too bad, because these conditions are usually when he excels.
After round the last leeward mark and heading toward the finish, his mast snapped. The Safety Boat towed him in and he was able to get a mast section replacement in time to participate in race three
During this race however, George discovered the boat was filling with water. After the race, he turned the boat on its side for an inspection. George found note only a small hole in his hull, but a broken centerboard as well.

Juniors Continue to Excel |
Drew Krogulecki and Alex Powell handle heavy air |
Junior sailing continued their Tuesday sailing this week. Conditions were a little challenging as the wind whipped up a bit. But the sailors were up to the challenge.
Since most team members are new to sailing, the emphasis this week has been on
- Leaving and returning to the launch area
- Getting out of "irons"
- Tacking while facing forward
- Sheeting in while steering
- Handling higher winds
All of the Junior Sailors are doing very well. Thanks to Mike Moody for giving his time this week to help coach the team. There is a picture story of Tuesday's action on the Lansing Sailing Club web site at www.lansingsailing.org.

Coleman Baar Sails With LSC |
Coleman Baar coming to the finish |
East Lansing high school student Coleman Baar brought his Laser out to LSC as a guest to test the waters of Lake Lansing.
Coleman sails on a high school team at Culver Academy, testing his racing skills mostly in interscholastic competition involving high schools in the Chicago area.
Coleman showed he is a solid sailor - and well able to handle difficult wind conditions. |
